I did not cry at several highly liked movies of Pixar (e.g., Coco, Inside Out) and, fair enough, I did not cry at this movie either. However, I had a lump in my throat during the emotional scenes of Luca. For me, it is one of the more enjoyable Pixar movies, but I guess it is just a matter of personal taste in the end.
Jack Dylan Grazer as Alberto Scorfano, a 14-year-old Italian boy and Luca's best friend who is enthusiastic to explore the human world. He is a free-spirited, expressive and gregarious boy who is "all about having fun".
When Luca first meets Alberto, the older boy tells him that he lives with his father on the island, but his dad is away a lot. It's not until the two friends have a major falling-out that Luca learns the truth: Alberto's father left him a long time ago, and isn't coming back.
In fact, according to director Enrico Casarosa (who also helmed the Pixar short La Luna), Luca won't be a love story at all — not a straight one, not a queer one, not one with love triangles or schoolyard crushes. Casarosa specifically wanted to focus on the intimate bonds of childhood friendship.
Once the friends enter Portorosso and befriend Giulia, our impression of Alberto deteriorates. He grows jealous of Luca's new friendship, and it shows. He becomes dismissive and unfriendly.
