In Daredevil #1 (by Bill Everett, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko), we see that Matt Murdock (who, by the way, we should note obviously lost his sight when he was old enough to know what colors were, so he can at least know what red looks like when someone says "red" to him) actually CAN feel different colors!
He cannot, however, discern pictures or video images, and he can only guess at colors based on the amount of heat they are absorbing or reflecting. His superhuman senses render him extraordinarily vulnerable to excessive sound, odors, etc., which can incapacitate him.
His thoughts further explain that he can hear heartbeats, recognize anyone by smelling their perfumes and odors, taste how many grains of salt are in food, and feel how many bullets there are in a revolver due to its weight. In a few panels, Lee even reveals Matt can distinguish colors apart purely by touch.
He can “see” around corners, through walls, glass and doors. Of course those do mute his radar sense. He can not see color, only form, shape and movement.
By the words Matt uses to describe the sensation, and the images on the screen, the idea really seems to be that what Matt “sees” are various shades of reds, yellows and oranges.
While a radioactive accident blinded Matt Murdock as a boy, his remaining senses function with superhuman sharpness, allowing him to perceive his surroundings better than a sighted man and challenge what most people think of as a “disability.”
He's really blind, in the sense that his sight doesn't work, like that of any other totally blind man. His powers sort of mitigate his inability to see, but he's still effectively blind. Okay, long post!
With time and training he has honed that ability to a point that he can “see” objects with his hearing. Accident which left him blind, also developed kind of echolocation skill, which is called radar sense to be precise. This skill + rest of his heightened senses allows Daredevil to move like he's totally normal guy.
Daredevil relies on an array of senses to compensate for his lack of eyesight. He listens for nearby heartbeats, he smells nearby body odors, and he utilizes his unique radar sense to identify folks in his general vicinity.
But in the comics, Daredevil specifically states how the rain is interfering with his other senses and actually made it harder for him to "see." While Daredevil is able to track Goldy partially by his heartbeat, the rain and a nearby construction site interfere with Matt's senses enough that Goldy is able to get the ...
3 Crime Scene Forensics. Daredevil's heightened senses allow him to examine his surroundings. At a crime scene, he can smell chemicals in the air, the copper of spent bullet casings, or the metal in blood that was spilled.
Stan Lee himself stated that Daredevil's Radar Sense is better than Spider-Man's Spider-Sense. Daredevil can see 150 yards in 360 degrees without concentrating, and even more when he does concentrate.
He kept the red in the suit as an accent and made the eyes red to give him a more fearful look. The new costume was meant to move Daredevil from neighborhood hero up to the big leagues.
Not only is Batman's takedown of Bullseye a clear indication of his superiority over Daredevil, but Bullseye even says so himself, meaning there is no doubt that the Batman vs Daredevil debate has been ended for good in this iconic Marvel and DC crossover–and Batman was the one who came out on top.
Daredevil is one of Marvel's most skilled hand-to-hand fighters, earning him the respect of heroes such as Captain America, and Matt's encounter with U.S. Agent has even confirmed that he could successfully take down the super soldier if he ever tried.
Had he never been blind, he might have never developed those skills, and if he suddenly gained vision, he might need to close his eyes to not have his fighting style thrown off by extraneous sensory information and need to train to make effective use of eyesight in a fight.
Matt Murdock does not really require his stick to navigate his way around, despite being blind his heightened senses mean that he is perfectly capable of walking around without the aide of his stick.
Daredevil proves to be the better strategist when he first knocks out Peter by ricocheting his billy club, but it could be argued that he couldn't accomplish this without his new powers. However, his second victory over Spider-Man is a result of his strategic mind, something he's possessed long before gaining powers.
This has been far from the only time that Daredevil has regained his eyesight. Once it was given to him by the Beyonder and another time he regained it by switching bodies with Doctor Doom. During another instance with Moondragon, she gave Matt his sight back to help her.
For the minimalist costume, the mask had no openings for the eyes. It makes sense as Matt Murdock was left visually-impaired after a childhood accident.
