Furthermore, Gimli wasn't as physically nimble as the rest of the Fellowship, although he was a strong fighter. Falling under the Ring's spell wasn't necessarily the biggest issue for the Dwarf, but in comparison to his lighter-footed companions, he couldn't be the one to carry it.
Indeed, the rings did not even turn them invisible; and the Dwarves were immune to some of the rings' more detrimental effects. It is believed that the Dwarves' natural hardiness, and the fact that it was only the more powerful Dwarf lords who possessed them, made them resistant to Sauron's control.
Not only are dwarves prohibited from entering the Undying Lands, but Gimli was never a Ring-bearer, therefore has no obvious right to be accepted into the Valar's home. Perhaps the blessings of Legolas, Gandalf, Elrond and Galadriel was enough to get the dwarf a ticket into the party.
While it is true that the entire race of hobbits seems predisposed to having a greater resistance to the evil of the One Ring, it's somewhat unlikely that any of the hobbits in The Lord of the Rings could have carried it except Frodo.

As for Sam, his resistance likely has to do with his innate goodness and loyalty. His love for Frodo helped him to overcome the pull of the Ring and his inner pureness was never fully pierced by the Ring.
Isildur's story in Lord of the Rings was the first proof that the Ring could not be willingly destroyed, and if Frodo couldn't do it, it's unlikely that anyone could. Even if Sam had somehow managed to get it away from his master, the Ring would have fought with all its power to influence him away from destroying it.
At this time in the story, Elves and Dwarves were more enemies than allies and refused to trust one another. But their differences weren't enough to keep Gimli from admiring Galadriel's beauty. So of all of the gifts that he could ask for, he requested a strand of her hair to remember her beauty.

At the end of Fellowship of the Ring, Frodo and his companions visit her. Frodo even offers her the one ring. Galadriel admits she has long awaited the chance to seize the powerful token. But, she says, if she took it, she would become corrupted herself and rule over Middle-earth as a beautiful but tyrannical queen.
The contents of Tolkiens' notes and other works weren't covered and were thus off-limits to the filmmakers. That's why Gandalf's mind coincidentally went blank — he legally couldn't name the wizards. So, the writers had Gandalf exploit a loophole by alluding to the two Istari without explicitly mentioning them.
