God of War (2018) saw Kratos call Atreus "boy" so much that it became a meme. Many would mimic Kratos by shouting "Boy!" in his voice, while others would sometimes call the game "Boy of War." Because of this, the fact that Kratos only calls Atreus "Boy" ONCE in God of War Ragnarok comes as a big surprise.
Whenever Kratos uses Atreus' name it's for dire moments and acts of sympathy. This acts as an awakening of sorts for Kratos. This isn't a man helping a boy, this a father risking his life for his son or doing what he can to console him.

As Atreus wonders about his heritage, he also learns that his mother gave him the birth name Loki. During Fimbulwinter, Atreus seeks answers about his Jötunn heritage, something Kratos cannot answer.
Atreus is the son of Kratos in Faye. For most of his life, his father was absent, which led him to believe Kratos didn't care for him or his mother. In consequence, Faye was the one who raised him, so she taught him many languages, how to use magic, as well as all about the Norse gods and myths.
Kratos named his son after the Last Spartan, the brave and loyal Spartan warrior who traveled to the Island of Creation to save Sparta from Zeus, whom Kratos accidentally killed out of rage and confusion.
Because he's only 14, Atreus is still very young, and thus still has a lot to learn, as is discussed in Newsweek's God of War: Ragnarök review. But being that young doesn't make him useless. In fact, Kratos has spent the last three years of Atreus' life training him to be a better, stronger fighter.
Kratos did not want to watch Atreus fall to the corruption of the immense power contained within him. But trying to deny Atreus's birthright almost ends his life.
Part of this development stems back to the end of “God of War” when Kratos and Atreus spread Faye's ashes and uncover yet another hidden lineage. Faye was a giant, which makes Atreus half giant and half god.

Believing Deimos to be dead, Kratos marked himself with a red tattoo, identical to his brother's birthmark, to honor his brother. Through flashbacks in the comic series (2010–11) written by Marv Wolfman, Kratos meets his wife Lysandra and they have a daughter named Calliope.
