Why did Michael marry Apollonia?
Michael's Marriage To Apollonia Was About Power
From the moment he killed McCluskey and Sollozzo, Michael was overwhelmed by the concept of power. He wasn't interested in spending time in Italy after the murders – partly due to having to leave home, but also because it was now clear to him that he was different.
An interesting side note is that there is no indication in the novel or the first and second movies that Michael or anyone ever tells Kay that Michael had been married in Sicily let alone how his first wife died.
He is also mentioned many times throughout the film; the dialogue makes it clear that Michael is tormented with guilt over ordering his brother's death, and that it has alienated him from his ex-wife, Kay (Diane Keaton), and his son, Anthony (Franc D'Ambrosio), both of whom know the truth about Fredo's death.
Apollonia had a loving but morganatic(unequal) marriage with Michael in consequence of his desire to own her; they both had a very short marriage. Apollonia was a young teenager and Michael was in his late twenties, as a result, Michael became possessive of Apollonia.
