Thorin was the only one to not have a yak wig, rather, his was made from human hair. The decision was made to make Thorin's hair stand out from the rest of the group. Martin Freeman, who plays our favorite burglar, was actually one of the lucky ones (in terms of the amount of time it took in hair and makeup).
The dwarves almost exclusively had yak hair. Horse hair was used for smoother wigs. It gives a realistic texture and shine that you can't get from synthetics — it also picks up dirt in a more realistic way than, say, Geralt's. Plus, everyone in Lord of the Rings is wearing a wig.
They were made to be of shorter beards as Thorin Oakenshield was their uncle by his sister Dis. The other dwarves were of the longbeard clan, apparently known for their bushy beards. So, it was a deliberate choice by the filmmaker to try to show them as closer kin than the other dwarves.

During Bilbo's birthday party, you can see Jackson's children, Billy and Katie, among the kids listening to Bilbo tell tales of his adventures with Gandalf. Billy is the only actor in the film who did not wear a wig, as his dad noted that his naturally curly hair was perfect for a hobbit.
In addition to the difficulty of sourcing yak hair at short notice, Peter King and his team would no doubt also have faced the challenging task of ensuring that the wigs and prostheses worn by the cast of The Hobbit didn't cause them any health problems.

Tauriel truly threw a wrench in Legolas' life when he fell in love with her. She was brave, fierce, and a protective leader of the guard. He was meant to be the dutiful son of King Thranduil, but in loving her, he became a stubborn, masterful archer instead. He loved exploration and adventure over his duties.
Thorin became the dwarf king at a very young age after the battle. However, Thorin never married nor had any children. The young dwarf king led his people out of Dunland and they finally re-established their home in the Blue Mountains. His younger sister, Dis, later gave birth to two children, Fíli and Kíli.
Tauriel admits her love for Kili in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. Tauriel leaves Thranduil and accompanies Legolas and Bilbo to Ravenhill in order to warn Thorin, Dwalin, Fili, and Kíli of an upcoming attack led by Bolg. She successfully finds Kíli and the two battle against Bolg together.
Their deaths and Thorin's did not end Durin's line, although did end the branch which had Thror, Thrain, and Thorin Oakenshield. Thorin's cousin, Dain Ironfoot, became King after Thorin's death. Dain's son, Thorin Stonehelm, became King after Dain died in the Battle of Dale. The line continued on after that.
Thorin Oakenshield is portrayed in the Hobbit films as having a height of 5'2" (1.57 m) based on a comparative analysis of film frames. Thorin Oakenshield was the grandson of King Thoror and son of Thrain II.
Thorin II "Oakenshield", eventually called King under the Mountain or Mountain King, was the son of Thráin II, the older brother of Frerin and Dís, the grandson of King Thrór and the uncle of Fíli and Kíli.
TL;DR: Thorin is half-elf, and Fili and Kili are themselves both part elf and half-human. The two young dwarves represent the union of Elves, Men, and Dwarves that once existed before Dale fell, and which will rise again.
Thórin Oakenshield was born in TA 2746 and was 195 years old when he perished in the Battle of Five Armies in the book. In the film trilogy, he was born in TA 2837 and was 104 when he was killed by Azog the Defiler.
After the death of Thorin in the Battle of Five Armies, Dain becomes King under the Mountain. He redeems the Arkenstone from Bard with a fourteenth of the treasure, which is used to re-establish Dale. Over the next three years, Bard rebuilds the city of Dale and becomes its ruler. The city begins to prosper again.
