When an avatar is born (the technical term is "decanted") as a post-adolescent, it looks like a Na'vi and can live comfortably on Pandora, but it has enough human neurophysiology to be used as an avatar, or surrogate body. The human volunteer then becomes the avatar's controller or "driver".
These Avatars are created using an embryo containing a mixture of Na'vi genes, and the human DNA of the person who will eventually sync and activate the body.

ATLA takes place on Earth, but it is not Earth as we know it. Instead of seven continents, the world is comprised of four nations: Water, Earth, Fire, and Air. The world is filled with humans, benders (people who can manipulate/use elements), chimera, and plants.

The reference implies that a Na'vi's queue may be considered an intimate area of the body. Removing the queue of Pandoran wildlife has been shown to have severe effects. Despite this, It is unknown what would canonically happen if a Na'vi queue was cut off, but it is still implied to be serious.
Her father is not a father, her father is another mother, Eywa, the Great Mother, the sentient life force of Pandora itself that exists in all things there, but is rarely understood. So essentially yes, Kiri was born from Eywa just like Anakin Skywalker was allegedly conceived by the Force itself and its midichlorians.
Jake Sully, ex-Marine, is recruited into the RDA's Avatar program after his scientist twin-brother, Tommy, is killed. Since Jake and Tommy share identical DNA make-up, Jake is able to step into his deceased brother's role as an Avatar driver.
