According to our survey, 65% of Americans consume media in a foreign language at least monthly on streaming services, social media, and cable TV. Americans consume most foreign media (82%) on streaming services. Additionally, Americans overwhelmingly prefer subbing (80%) over dubbing (20%).
Some might prefer subtitles for specific reasons, while others find dubbed movies more convenient as they will not spend too much time reading, understanding, and appreciating the content simultaneously. Some other viewers have been watching dubbed videos for so long that they are not used to watching with subtitles.
Keep in mind there are also cons to both versions. For example, subbed anime can be difficult to watch for people with learning disabilities, and reading the subtitles can take attention away from the animation. On the flip side, the translations aren't as accurate in dub, and not every anime is available in dub.
This process also ensures that subtleties within the original dialogue are not lost when translated to another language. By preserving these elements of culture, dubbing provides a more accurate portrayal of film and TV dialogues while keeping its cultural roots intact.
The major drawback is that it is very expensive when compared to subtitling. It results in lack of authenticity as it replaces the original with a translated dialogue. If you're a fast reader, prefer to hear the Japanese voices for timing and pronunciation, or are an obnoxious purist, like myself, stick with subs. If you prefer to be able to not have to read, or want to do something else while you watch, go dub. Either way, you're subject to script and actor interpretation.
