In Avengers: Infinity War, Star-Lord and Gamora kiss following a flashback of when the mad titan Thanos (Josh Brolin) adopted Gamora as a little girl. Before they kiss, Gamora makes Star-Lord promise to kill her if necessary so that Thanos cannot learn the location of the Soul Stone.
While Peter and Gamora don't end up together in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, both characters get the endings that they needed. Finding themselves if not each other, the two former Guardians of the Galaxy are far better off at the end of the film than they were in the beginning.
In the films, these two had a fairly straightforward journey into becoming a romantic couple, and while Guardians Volume Three put an end to their relationship, it was still one of the MCU's best. But the love story between Star-Lord and Gamora was very different in the original comics.
Star-Lord and Gamora initially bonded after they fought each other for the Power Stone. As members of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord and Gamora's romantic relationship had just started to develop in the MCU.
Sometime before the Red Skull overthrew the United States of America, Star-Lord stepped up to be the Emperor of the Spartax Empire, while marrying L'ssa who bore him two children, Meredith and Jason.
He leaves the Guardians of the Galaxy and Gamora to marry L'ssa and fathers two kids; however, the Universal Church of Truth draws him out in a firefight, which leaves his homeworld vulnerable to attack the Church destroys everything and everyone he loves.
It turns out that Nebula star Karen Gillan very much believes that Nebula does have a little crush on Peter Quill, and during a recent interview with The New York Times, director James Gunn expanded on that a bit and believes that there could be something there.
What is inappropriate in Guardians of the Galaxy 3?
Violence & Scariness. Several upsetting scenes involving Rocket's past, which is revealed to be a traumatic story of grief and animal torture/death (hybrid creatures made through experiments may be alarming to young kids). Massive destruction.
The film features several scenes of supernatural animal abuse, with CGI-rendered animals given disfiguring mutations, and grotesque mechanical appendages. Another sequence sees the Guardians visit the Orgosphere, an interstellar mass made entirely of fleshy organic matter.
A quick, comedic scene in Vol. 3's Orgocorp heist teases some potential romance between Peter Quill and Nebula, but James Gunn claims that it was never going to become anything more (per The New York Times).
Thanos never cared much for Nebula, even going so far as to say in Guardians of the Galaxy that Gamora was his favorite. That could be because, to Thanos, Nebula was nothing more than a means to spare Gamora while still obtaining the Soul Stone.
So much so that Tony was arguably the best father figure that Nebula has ever gotten in the MCU. Thanos had an abusive relationship with his adopted daughters. While he favored Gamora (Zoe Saldana), he was harsh and downright dismissive of Nebula.
Later, Peter quit the group to take over as Emperor of the Spartax Empire, the role his father once had. To fill the void he left, Kitty Pryde of the X-Men became the new Star-Lord.
Mantis later identified in front of Gamora that Quill was romantically in love with her. However, when Peter did confess his feelings for her, by asking what they would do with their "unspoken" thing, but it turned into a fight.
Upon saving Rocket and defeating High Evolutionary, Quill made peace with the loss of Gamora and decided to seek out his family. Quill informed the Guardians that he would be leaving the team to move back to Earth, appointing Rocket as the Guardians' new leader.
In 1988, at the age of eight, Quill was kidnapped by Yondu and his Ravager gang of pirates and grew up in space. We didn't know it at the time, but Ego was searching for the many children he sired across galaxies in the hopes of finding an heir who shared his celestial powers.
