Drinking and drug use land on the screen, too. And naturally, Cobra Kai has some violent moments. I mean, it is a show predicated, at least in part, on beating people up. And sometimes, even characters we ostensibly root for have moments where they're just plain mean.
This series follows a "The Karate Kid" franchise, but should be prepared for it because there's a lot more mature and darker than the movies. Rated TV-14 for strong martial arts violence and language throughout, some suggestive content, alcohol/smoking and some drugs use, and thematic material.

Johnny tries to enter Cobra Kai in the All Valley Karate Tournament only to learn the dojo is permanently banned due to the transgressions and poor sportsmanship committed in the 1985 All-Valley Tournament by Kreese, Terry Silver and Mike Barnes.

Because Cobra Kai fell outside of YouTube's company strategy and other scripted content at YouTube had been falling to cancelation left and right, Cobra Kai needed an outlet to secure its future, especially seeing it was refused commission past a third season.
Tory Nichols and Eli "Hawk" Moskowitz went from friends to enemies on Netflix's Cobra Kai, but IRL Peyton List and Jacob Bertrand, the actors who play both characters on the show, are super close. After years of speculation, the duo officially confirmed that they're dating, and I can't lie, I kinda 'ship it.
He and Sam bond closely while training and enter a short relationship, however the relationship is short-lived as she cheats on him with Miguel while they are attending Moon's party due to Sam finding out from Aisha that Miguel returned Miyagi's Medal of Honor to Robby, which had been stolen by Hawk.
There's not much cursing (a few uses of the word "ass") or sexuality (mild flirting and one chaste kiss), but there are a whole lot of fight scenes. The Chinese bullies are pretty merciless both off and on the mat. They're even willing to do some unethical moves to secure a championship.
In the Cobra Kai dojo, the words, "Strike hard. Strike fast. No mercy." were written as a motto for Johnny's students. Johnny used them as a way to better teach his students, but he soon found the detrimental effects of those words.
The line, "This is where the law stops and I start, sucker!", was inspired by a line spoken by Steve McQueen in The Reivers. Cobra needed much additional editing because the film was so graphically violent that it originally received an X rating. It was edited to receive an R rating.
Violence & Gore (35) Bloodless (almost always) karate combat. Street fights, refereed athletic practices and sports violence is to be expected, but nothing graphic. There are degrading, violent verbal outbursts from adults as well.
This show doesn't have obviously harmful content but certainly hits on mature themes that younger kids may not be ready to be exposed to. Some of these themes include complex dating relationships and toxic family dynamics.
Robby and Tory have a complicated relationship, having gone from enemies to lovers. Tory initially dates Miguel Diaz, the ex-boyfriend of Robby's girlfriend Samantha LaRusso. The tension between the two couples is apparent for this reason, with Robby disliking Tory for her bullying of Sam.
Though initially still hung up over his break up with Sam, Miguel eventually began dating a new Cobra Kai student named Tory Nichols. After Hawk attacked and vandalized Miyagi-Do and took Mr. Miyagi's medal of honor, Miguel fought Hawk to recover it so he could give it back to the dojo.
The Cobra Kai Love Quad, which consists of Miguel Diaz (Xolo Maridueña), Samantha LaRusso (Mary Mouser), Robby Keene (Tanner Buchanan) and Tory Nichols (Peyton List), have had their fair share of broken hearts — and bones.
Yet, they came together when Robby abandoned his bad-boy ways and sought guidance and mentorship from Daniel. Their affection led to a romance that sparked a bitter rivalry between Robby, and Sam's previous love interest Miguel.
After the school fight, Amand was with Sam in the hospital, even vowing to get Tory expelled. She looks after Sam and tries her best to help her through her PTSD while Daniel was absent.
They haven't shown any romantic interest in each other in a while. Sam and Robby getting back together would only make matters worse and could even reignite former feuds. Sam and Robby are ultimately better off as friends if they are at that point once again.
Someone who is planning to watch Cobra Kai can enjoy the show without having seen any of the Karate Kid movies. That said, Cobra Kai works much better for those who have seen at least the original Karate Kid.
Part 1 of Cobra Kai Season 6 premieres July 18, followed by Part 2 on Nov. 24. The third and final part of Season 6 will arrive in 2025. All three batches will consist of five episodes each.
