Okoye has mainly served as the General of the Dora Milaje – Wakanda's all-female elite force of defense – but she left the role behind following the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever events, which open up the character for new possibilities in the MCU.
After Namor kidnaps Shuri and Williams, Ramonda strips Okoye of her title of general of the Dora Milaje, which leads to her becoming a Midnight Angel near the end of the film.
What happens to Okoye at the end of Wakanda Forever?
With the action climax out of the way, the film closes a series of loose threads and circles back to T'Challa's memory for an emotional close. After getting arrested for helping the Wakandans, Okoye breaks CIA Agent Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) out of armed custody.
In short, at the end of the movie, Okoye is no longer part of Wakanda's Dora Milaje security force and leaves Wakanda to wander the earth like Cain in “Kung Fu”— no, really. “There's another [deleted scene] of mine that's [Okoye] saying bye to Shuri,” Gurira explained.
Together with Shuri, Okoye attempted to protect Riri Williams from the Talokanil; however, Shuri ended up being captured. For recklessly putting the Princess in danger, Okoye was stripped from her rank as the Dora Milaje General by Ramonda.
Nakia lied to T'Challa, claiming someone else had killed Monica, but when her deceit came to light, he cast her out of the Dora Milaje, leaving her to return to her tribe in disgrace.
As such, Shuri didn't fight for the Wakandan throne because she understood it wasn't right for her to do so at the time - and this marks a pivotal step on her journey to accept grief and find some inner peace, making it the right decision in the long run.
However, in the 2022 sequel, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Okoye was dismissed from the Dora after failing to protect Shuri (Letitia Wright) from Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) and the Talokan warriors.
The film shows that Okoye is very much Ramonda's "daughter" as her blood-relations. Okoye's dismissal was a betrayal. There's no other way to say it. Ramonda seemed to want to inflict upon Okoye what she felt when Okoye would not abandon her position as head of the Dora Milaje to help her and Shuri flee.
Both Okoye and Aneka are shown as members of the Midnight Angels, which is a subgroup of the Dora Milaje that includes assassins and warriors closest to the reigning Black Panther.
Okoye was presumably born in Wakanda, and later became the leader of the Dora Milaje, a group of warriors who protected the king and queen. She would later marry W'Kabi, the head of security, and have children with him.
I personally feel as if okoye would be a much better fit, though I understand she isn't in the royal bloodline, but marvel is no stranger to making odd decisions make sense.
Killmonger saved Okoye as she fought alongside him. The two were joined by Ramonda later on and soon, they won the battle. Okoye celebrated Wakanda's victory alongside the rest of the Wakandan soldiers.
When you watch the movie a second time, it's evident Ramonda was likely trying to tell Shuri about T'Challa's secret son with Nakia, Prince T'Challa, who is finally introduced in the film's mid-credits scene. Before Namor's arrival, Ramonda mentioned how T'Challa's presence is still with her.
The MCU has had great couples in the past, and they've told love stories within superhero films before. But ultimately, while there was clear chemistry between Shuri and Namor, it was for the best that Marvel Studios decided to do without their potential love line.
After Shuri refuses to strike an alliance with Namor and the Talokanil, the mutant and his forces attack Wakanda, flooding the streets, and leading to the death of Queen Ramonda as she tries to save Riri Williams, a.k.a. Ironheart.
It isn't until the very end of the movie, in which Shuri concedes the throne to M'Baku (Winston Duke), that the young Wakandan is finally able to take the time to process her grief.
At the end of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Nakia reveals to Shuri that she became pregnant with T'Challa's baby before he died and had his child, whom she raised in secret in Haiti. Shuri and the child, a son named Toussaint, meet at the end of the movie.
Young Toussaint was kept hidden in Haiti to protect him from the pressures of the Wakandan throne -- explaining why Nakia didn't attend T'Challa's funeral -- but mentions Queen Ramonda got to meet him before she died.
She consequently became jealous of T'Challa's American ex-girlfriend Monica Lynne and plotted to kill her, but T'Challa rescued her and banished Nakia bringing great shame on her tribe and Wakanda.
However, in Wakanda Forever, Okoye was dismissed from the Dora after failing to protect Shuri (Letitia Wright) from Namor (Tenoch Huerta Mejía) and the Talokan warriors.
