The 15th round comes to naught and Rocky manages to pummel Creed until the bell rings once more. It is the first time an opponent had lasted the full 15 rounds against him and as a result, it ends up with a split decision, Creed wins the fight and holds on to his title.
Though Rocky famously ends with the titular boxer losing to Apollo Creed, the result is actually far more favorable for the Italian Stallion than it may seem. Despite Apollo Creed retaining his title, his victory over Balboa still comes as something of a black mark on his record.

The definitive Rocky opponent is easily Apollo Creed. That Rocky ultimately loses to Apollo in their match at the end of the first movie solidified Rocky as an all-time great. Apollo returned to lose in the sequel, but the movie built up his character well enough that losing befit his arc.
