There was, as it happens, an actual Corleonesi Mafia clan, a part of the Sicilian Mafia. The Godfather characters are, however, based on the New York Mafia, and not their Sicilian counterparts, although the story starts there with Vito Corleone.
Vincent is the illegitimate son of Sonny Corleone and his mistress Lucy Mancini. He eventually succeeds his uncle Michael as head of the Corleone family.

1974–1980: Scorsese collaboration and acclaim. De Niro had a pivotal role in Francis Ford Coppola's crime epic The Godfather Part II (1974), playing the young Vito Corleone.
Toward the end of the film, Michael names Vincent as his successor, on condition that he break off his relationship with Mary. The good news is that city of Corleone has changed for the better. Crime bosses like Salvatore Totò Riina and Bernardo Provenzano, who once ruled with bloody iron fists, are now serving life sentences in prison.
