In 1920, after having been institutionalized by her family, an unknown vampire turned her to save her from the relentless tracker, James. Later, she was led to the love of her life, Jasper, after receiving a vision of him, and the pair subsequently joined the peaceful coven of the Cullen family.
It is eventually revealed that she was born around 1901 in Biloxi, Mississippi, and was committed to an asylum because she had premonitions. Alice was transformed by an old vampire who worked at the asylum to protect her from James, a tracker vampire who was hunting her.
She also met a friendly vampire who worked at the hospital. But then Alice saw a vision of James hunting her down and killing her. He caught her scent and went on one of his serial-killer hunts for her. The friendly vampire turned Alice and died keeping James away while she changed.
Part of the reason why she can't remember much, is because she was kept in a dark cell in the asylum. It is revealed that she was turned by a vampire, to save her from a tracker named James. James said her blood smells even sweeter than Bella's. Later on, she was led by a vision to the love of her life, Jasper Hale.
Why couldn't Alice see Bella's future when she was pregnant?
During Breaking Dawn, Alice's visions of Bella's future are completely blocked due to her pregnancy with Renesmee. She explains to Jacob that it gives her a headache to try and see, and since she cannot see at all with him around, her headache gets lessened.
