Conceived after Bruce impregnated Talia al Ghul, Damian was birthed through an artificial womb to spare Talia the labours of pregnancy. After being put into contact with a piece of the Chaos Shard, Damian quickly aged, turning four by the end of his first year of life. This birthing anomaly was known to few.
Damian was a product of Bruce and Talia when Talia drugged Batman and it made him do what she wanted. Talia then fell pregnant with Damian and gave birth to him 9 months later. Damian was raised under his grandfather, Ra's Al Ghul, to be the future leader of the League of Shadows.
In Morrison's version, the child Damian Wayne is the result of a tryst between Batman and Talia, during which the Dark Knight claims he was drugged when they were at the Tropic of Cancer, though Morrison later admitted the claim of drugging was a canonical error on their part.
As revealed in Batman #656, Talia had drugged Bruce and had sex with him in order to conceive a child as part of a eugenics experiment. She named the child Damian. Bruce never knew she was pregnant, and he didn't learn about Damian until years later.
