After the Night of a Thousand Tears, most of Mandalore's forces were defeated. Bo-Katan was contacted by the Imperial Security Bureau. She met with Gideon and surrendered the Darksaber, in return for the Empire stopping the Purge. The Empire broke the promise and continued killing Mandalorians.
The Darksaber being crushed by Moff Gideon in the Season 3 finale of the Mandalorian has me conflicted, because on one hand, it was the most unique and beautiful looking lightsaber after thousands of years of being passed down from Pre Vizsla, to Darth Maul, to Sabine Wren, to Bo Katan, to Moff Gideon, to Din Djarin, ...
Mando offered it up to her, but she refused, knowing that taking it would be a violation of the rules. That means that if Bo-Katan ever wants to be officially recognized as the new leader of their people, she'll have to go up against her former ally. Only then can it be hers.
Sabine found the Darksaber on Dathomir and used it in her mission to free Mandalore from Imperial rule. She later gave the blade to Bo-Katan because she believed Kryze was better suited to lead the Mandalorians, and also felt guilty about her involvement with the Empire.
From that moment on, Din Djarin puts up a fight, although he soon receives help from Bo-Katan herself, Darksaber in hand, thrusting non-stop. Unfortunately, the mighty beskar armor of the imperial officer ruins the weapon, which falls to the ground sizzling and sparking.

Why is Mando so weak with the Darksaber?
All of that goes to show that Mando not being able to lift the Darksaber has nothing to do with how he acquired the blade or his failing the Creed. Accordingly, the best explanation is still that the Darksaber doesn't personally approve of Mando.
Why Is the Darksaber Heavy for Din? The Armorer mentions in passing during The Mandalorian that the difficulty related to wielding the Darksaber is driven by its user fighting against the blade itself rather than letting themselves go with the natural flow of combat.
At the time of The Mandalorian story, it is pretty clear that Moff Gideon is not a Sith Lord even though he has the Darksaber in his possession nor does he have any links to the Jedi. Moff Gideon is nothing more than one of the Empire's existing bad guys who officially worked for the Imperial Security Bureau.
Dave Filoni, a Lucasfilm creative, explains that the Darksaber is not necessarily more powerful than a typical lightsaber and its old age could make it less powerful. The main difference between the Darksaber and lightsaber is its design, with the flat blade of energy being a unique "Mandalorian twist."
The episode saw Bo-Katan Kryze wielding the Darksaber as she fought Moff Gideon, which ended with (final spoiler warning) the Mandalorian artefact being crushed in the fist of Gideon's fancy new Dark trooper armour.
Because the Darksaber's sentience intertwined its fate with the rulers of Mandalore, Mando's rejection of that role meant that their wills could never align. When he passes away, it gets passed down through inheritance to his son, Luke Skywalker. So technically. the Darksaber belongs to Luke Skywalker rightfully.

I've seen a number of theories that Din Djarin needs a Jedi's training to learn how to use the Darksaber. But, I think there's a much more likely teacher - a Mandalorian who's already learned how to wield it as a non force-user.
