According to Tommy Andreasen, the thickness of the fog may have been thick enough to prevented Cole from dying from his fall, as Garmadon was shown to jump into the darkness without a parachute in "Into the Breach." Cole mentioned that when he was taken by the tentacles, it was the "coldest thing he had ever felt."
In Episode 98, Cole recovered from his fall where he attempted to escape from the depths of the city. He ultimately managed to use his Earth Driller to leave the city and return to the Monastery in time to help the ninja battle the Oni.
Back at Borg Tower, Lloyd discovers the Golden Armor and learns that its power can withstand the Oni. Nya tasks Kai with melting down the armor and recasting it. As the ninja head for a village with a forge, it's revealed that Cole is not dead, merely stuck on a ledge inside the cloud of darkness.
After Cole and the others were freed, Jay used his last wish to undo recent events. On the Day of the Departed, Cole confronted Yang, who tricked Cole into reviving the Ninjas' old enemies. Cole fought Yang, but eventually made amends with him, and Cole became a human once more via the Rift of Return.

What is Cole's scar?
In "Day of the Departed," Cole gained a green scar when he transformed back into a human via the Rift of Return. As of Season 8, the scar is orange and appears only when Cole uses his Earth Punch. Cole is the first Master of Earth to have this ability.
During "Into the Dark," Vania has shown most of her interest in Cole, something he seems touched by. When the ninja didn't believe his story, Vania states that she believes his story as she has seen a Geckle before.

Lloyd developed an interest in Princess Harumi in Season 8. When he first saw her, Lloyd was amazed by her appearance which earned him teasing from his teammates to his dismay. Later on, he got acquainted with her and they bonded to the extent where Lloyd could call her "Rumi" instead of "princess".
Akita was at the Great Lake when the ninja were about to leave the realm. They both told the other to take care before she watched Lloyd leave her world. Lloyd struggled to say the proper words of goodbye to her, but she seized the moment and kissed him on the cheek, shocking Lloyd.
Out of all the ninja, Vania took the most interest in Cole. Although she doesn't have a love interest with the Earth Ninja, she spent the most time with Cole and he earned Vania's respect.
