Though believed to have perished in a battle against Scott Lang, Cross survived but was left severely mutilated, ending up in the Quantum Realm. There, he was found by Kang, who transformed him into a Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing (M.O.D.O.K) and forced him into servitude.
In Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania, it's revealed that Darren was blasted down into the Quantum Realm where he was found, and rehabilitated, by Kang. Now serving as his “hunter” of sorts, M.O.D.O.K. is at Kang's every beck and call ready to do whatever needs to be done.
What went wrong? M.O.D.O.K., the perfect killing machine. His name is literally an acronym for Modified Organism Designed Only for Killing. Before becoming a cyborg-type creature, he was Darren Cross (Corey Stoll), a scorned scientist who felt abandoned by his mentor.
Ant-Man has already shown the ability to sabotage technologically-advanced suits like he did with Falcon and Iron Man in previous movies. This could be a key advantage in defeating Kang.
Janet also realizes Kang didn't end in the Quantum Realm by accident. Instead, he was exiled to this place outside time and space, where he would remain trapped forever. As much as Janet wishes to go back to her family, she cannot allow Kang to escape and return to his conquering ways.

Is Kang stronger than Thanos?
Kang isn't physically stronger than Thanos, and if the two were to square up in a one-vs-one fight then the Titan would arguably win. However, Kang's knowledge of the multiverse means that would quite literally be several steps ahead of Thanos at all times. As a result, Kang wins this battle.
Summary. He Who Remains and Kang the Conqueror are different variants of the same person, and Loki Season 2 revealed how they were connected. Victor Timely was another Kang variant, but fans speculated they all may be the same people at different points in their individual timelines.
However, M.O.D.O.K. suddenly arrived, having had a change of heart due to Stature's advice, and manages to disable Kang's force field at the cost of his own life. Kang was left defenseless against an army of ants that instantly swarmed him and damaged his armor, carrying him away.
However, Kang teamed up with Janet van Dyne to repair his Time Sphere and Multiversal Engine Core and return to his annihilation of timelines. However, when van Dyne learned of Kang's true intentions, she turned on him and used multiple growth discs on the Core, enlarging it to where Kang couldn't use it.
During her isolation, she encountered Kang the Conqueror, who presented himself as a lost traveler, in order to manipulate her into helping him restore his Time Sphere.
We all imagined Darren had died in the process, but Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania reveals he met an even worse fate. The Pym particles randomly enlarged and shrunk down parts of Darren's body once the Yellowjacket suit was damaged, turning him into a giant head with tiny limbs.
Kang the Conqueror was exiled to the MCU Quantum Realm by his own variants in the Council of Kangs due to his attempts to eradicate them and become the sole Kang in the multiverse.
While successful, the experiments result in him developing a freakishly overdeveloped head and a stunted body, causing the character's signature look and use of a hoverchair for mobility. After the experiments, he kills his creators and takes control of A.I.M.
Cross later returns in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023), having become M.O.D.O.K. (Mechanized Organism Designed Only for Killing) due to his uncontrolled shrinking and aligned himself with Kang the Conqueror, who placed him in special armor.
A simple lab accident with poisonous gasses even led him to develop schizophrenia, which in turn led him to adopt multiple personas. At different times the original Ant-Man was also Giant Man, Goliath, Yellowjacket, and even the Wasp. (Not to mention a litany of other aliases he adopted over the years.)
Scott and Hope's budding romance never quite took off, and due to Scott's ordeal in Berlin, and because he had used Hank's Ant-Man suit, Hank was now a fugitive from the law. Part of Scott's plea deal stated that he was no longer allowed to contact Hank or Hope.
As the Council of Kangs now had access to the Sacred Timeline, they chose to banish Kang the Conqueror, whom they deemed too dangerous. Ambushing him while in his Time Sphere, the Council of Kangs exiled Kang the Conqueror to the Quantum Realm.

Kang was trapped in the Quantum Realm with zero access to the Multiverse for a long time, and was full of vengeance and rage against Ant-Man and his family. So I guess he was really desperate and not thinking clearly.
Prior to his appearance in Quantumania, though, Majors made his MCU debut in the Season 1 finale of Loki, playing one (of many) variants of his villain Kang the Conqueror named He Who Remains.
He also ensures that some of the technology Kang will need gets invented (Tony's time travel machine). As he gamed this particular fight over and over, maybe more than 15 million times, He Who Remains chose this specific set of events. He caused Heimdall, Loki, Gamora, Black Widow, and Iron Man to die.
The Time-Eater ranks atop the most powerful Kang variants thanks to his assuming Galactus' power. This variant killed Galactus and absorbed the Power Cosmic.
Is He Who Remains stronger than Kang the Conqueror?
Despite the shocking level of power expressed by Kang the Conqueror in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Loki season 1 implied that He Who Remains was, in fact, stronger than the Conqueror and all his other variants.
Kang The Conqueror was exiled by none other than Ravonna Renslayer. Renslayer, a key figure in Kang's complex history, is responsible for sending him away. Their relationship is multifaceted, marked by love, betrayal, and power struggles.
