When Bob and other Socs jump Johnny and Ponyboy, Johnny stabs and kills Bob, saving Ponyboy. The two Greasers hide out in an abandoned church, but when a group of children breaks into the church and a fire starts, Johnny saves them. In the process, though, he breaks his back and later succumbs to his injuries.
Johnny, however, is in very bad shape—he was struck by a piece of burning timber as it fell, and may have broken his back. The man jokingly asks Ponyboy if he and Johnny are professional heroes. Ponyboy tells him that they are juvenile delinquents. Ponyboy has suffered mild burns.
In The Outsiders, Johnny dies as a result of burns and a spinal injury sustained while rescuing children from the burning church. When the boys return from eating, the church is on fire, and Johnny, Dally, and Ponyboy rush in to save the children inside. The roof collapses on Johnny, breaking his back.
About four months ago, Johnny was out in a field hunting a football to practice a few kicks, and four Socs drove by in a blue Mustang. They stopped and jumped him, beating Johnny half to death.
However, after Ponyboy spends too much time in the burning church, he passes out and does not awaken until he is in the hospital, where he learns that he and Dally are mostly unscathed. Unfortunately, Johnny is not so lucky, since a piece of the church fell on him, breaking his back.
Did Johnny get stabbed in The Outsiders? Johnny does not get stabbed in The Outsiders. He does, however, stab Bob, a Soc who had jumped him months before, in order to save Ponyboy.
Ponyboy's back was on fire but he didn't feel it because Dally had given him a leather jacket. Dally ran in and knocked Ponyboy out because his back was on fire and carried Johnny out of the burning church.
Johnny had been severely beaten by a group of Socs before this story begins. This beating puts him almost over the edge; in fact, the Socs scared him so much that he even carries a switchblade in his pocket. Johnny vows that, "He would kill the next person who jumped him."
The policemen kill Dally. After Johnny dies in the hospital, Dally is so upset, he runs away from Ponyboy and robs a grocery store. The police chase him to the empty lot where the greasers hang out. There, Dally takes out his unloaded gun and threatens the police, who shoot him in self-defense.
Ponyboy thinks he killed Bob. Darry tells Randy that Ponyboy is racked up physically and so emotionally stressed that he doesn't remember what really happened and that's why he thinks he killed Bob. Pony pretends he killed Bob and that Johnny isn't dead because he figured it wouldn't hurt as much.
How does Dally die in the outsiders? Dally is shot by police after robbing a grocery store with an unloaded gun. He is cornered by the police, and raises the gun at them. They shoot and kill him.
When Ponyboy threw the last kid out of the burning church a falling ember fell on johnny's back, breaking it his back. How does Johnny get hurt? Be specific. Jonny's parents reacted by doing nothing, they didn't care.
Johnny is in critical condition; his back is broken and he is suffering with third-degree burns. If he lives, he will not be able to walk for the rest of his life.
How does Dally react to Johnny's death? Dally is furious and has a breakdown because Johnny was the one person he actually cared about. Dally is furious at the doctor for not being able to save Johnny.
Ponyboy asks Sodapop about Sandy and learns that she got pregnant and moved to Florida. Her parents refused to let her marry Sodapop because of his age, so Sandy left to live with her grandmother. Sodapop and Darry go to work, and Two-Bit and Ponyboy go to get Cokes at the Tasty Freeze.
Family: Ponyboy and Darry reconcile in Chapter 6, so they have a good relationship in Chapter 7. Ponyboy and Sodapop sleep in the same bed because Sodapop's presence helps ease Ponyboy's nightmares. Loyalty: The greasers have strong bonds of loyalty. Two-Bit spends the day with Ponyboy so he won't be left alone.
Johnny is dying and is not impressed that the greasers won the rumble: "Useless . . . fighting's no good." He asks to speak to Ponyboy, and, leaning over him, Johnny's last words are "Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold." When Johnny dies, Dally bolts out of the room and takes off running.
When Pony looks at Darry he sees that he is crying. In that split second, Ponyboy realizes that Darry does care for him, that he was just trying too hard. After losing his parents, Darry fears losing another loved one.
In The Outsiders, Darry feels hatred for Paul Holden because he feels jealousy for Paul, but also because ''he was ashamed to be on our side, ashamed to be seen with the Brumly boys, the Shepard's gang.
Ponyboy walks home and finds Darry furious with him for staying out so late. In the ensuing argument, Darry slaps Ponyboy. No one in Ponyboy's family has ever hit him before, and Ponyboy storms out of the house in a rage.
Dally does two separate things that help save Ponyboy's life. Explain them both. First, he knocks Ponyboy to the ground when he's on fire and attempting to run back into the building. Second, he had given Ponyboy his jacket, which provided protection to Ponyboy when he was in the fire.
