In 1996, Umbridge and many other Slytherins found the D.A.'s headquarters in the Room of Requirement, after they were betrayed by Marietta Edgecombe. Marietta betrayed the D.A. after Umbridge threatened to make sure her mother would lose her job at the Ministry.
The association became known as Dumbledore's Army and its first meeting took place at the Hog's Head pub in Hogsmeade. Without anyone noticing, the meeting was overheard by Willy Widdershins, who informed Umbridge of the meeting in a plea-bargain to avoid punishment for a series of Regurgitating toilet incidents.
Shortly before Easter, one D.A. member, Marietta Edgecombe, betrayed them to Umbridge. She was a reluctant member of the D.A., having been brought to the meetings by her friend, Cho Chang.
Creation. After hearing about the defensive magic organisation, Dolores Umbridge used her power as Hogwarts High Inquisitor to pass this Educational Decree on 7 October 1995, which forbade the regular meeting of three or more students without the High Inquisitor's consent.
The letter is from Sirius, and reads: “Today, same time, same place.” Umbridge is sitting in on Potions, and Snape is visibly irritated. Later, Harry, Ron, and Hermione study in the Common Room until everyone else has gone to bed. Sirius appears in the fire.

Was Umbridge a death eater?
Harry describes Umbridge to Sirius Black, saying that she's vile enough to be a Death Eater, despite not being one. Umbridge is also depicted to be a prejudiced person, despising half-breeds and Muggle-born witches and wizards to the point of firing Hagrid due to his half-giant birth status.
Although Umbridge was not a Death Eater, and had no direct contact with Lord Voldemort, she showed that she was fairly in line with their goals. This was due to Umbridge's callous nature and her prejudiced beliefs, both of which were similar to Death Eater behavior.
The only staff member who supported Umbridge whole-heartedly was the caretaker, Argus Filch, who grew to like her methods, as well as being given permission to torture students himself. She later fired Gamekeeper Rubeus Hagrid, as he was a half-giant.
Apparently, Umbridge's mother was a Muggle and her brother was a Squib – a source of huge embarrassment for the family. Perhaps their abandonment and retreat back into the Muggle world had such a huge impact on Umbridge that it became the catalyst for her Muggleborn-targeted cruelty later on in life.
Their relationship ends when the D.A. is exposed following Marietta Edgecombe's betrayal of the group to Umbridge. Cho defends her friend's actions by saying that Marietta simply made a mistake.
Cho didn't like Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger; she believed that Harry had romantic feelings for Hermione, instead of being friends. This was one of the reasons that Cho and Harry fell apart. However, she fought with Dumbledore's Army during the Battle of Hogwarts, and the most of them survived the war.
Their relationship grew stronger after the death of Cedric Diggory, but Harry suspected Cho of betraying their secret student group. Cho's lingering feelings for Cedric and a lack of chemistry between her and Harry contributed to their breakup, leading to Harry ultimately ending up with Ginny Weasley.
When she became afraid that her mother's job at the Ministry of Magic might be threatened by her membership in the organisation, Marietta betrayed the D.A. to Umbridge.
Let's look at the evidence. So Umbridge acquires the locket as a bribe from Mundungus Fletcher, and though it once belonged to Salazar Slytherin, Merope Gaunt, and Hepzibah Smith, Umbridge is unaware that the locket is one of Lord Vodemort's Horcruxes - or that it belonged to him at all.

Bellatrix was an unapologetic monster who utterly relished in the pain and torment she caused, Umbridge was a monster but a monster in a pink coat, she could hide her evil behind a fake smile and supposed civility.
That's why Umbridge is so much more hateable; Voldemort ignores the rules to destroy people, Umbridge rewrites them to do it. This. Umbridge is the kind of evil that gets away with it - either because they wrote the rules and enforce them themselves or because they've got the person who does in their pocket.

Despite this, some feel that her extreme cruelty in Deathly Hallows was given to the influence of Slytherin's Locket as a Horcrux, but J.K. Rowling has affirmed that this isn't the case and that the Locket couldn't worsen Umbridge as she was already such a horrible person.
Whilst attempting to protect Hagrid from being sacked by Umbridge, McGonagall was attacked by Umbridge's Aurors and was sent to St Mungo's Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.
When the centaurs made threatening moves, Umbridge cast "Incarcerous" on the centaur Magorian, strangling him with ropes. For her, pink is an affectation as false as her laugh and her kittens. It is the colour of Valentine's Day, of love and romance. It is also a colour – rightly or wrongly – with girlish, sweet associations, and it is perhaps this that Umbridge wishes to project when she insists on dressing herself head to toe in it.
Dolores Umbridge is. She's among some of the nastiest characters in the whole series (along with Fenrir Greyback (ew)). In some ways, she was definitely more sinister than Voldemort.
