In the series, it derives from the fact that she can "echo" her ancestor's powers. The D23 trailer for Echo from last year started with the following narration by one of her tribe's elders: Our ancestors were powerful. Their strength echoes through you.
Unlike many other Marvel characters, Maya Lopez's abilities are fully innate. Even before adopting the Echo moniker, Maya can understand spoken language by reading lips, and she's able to replicate other people's skills effortlessly.
While Echo still has her usual photographic reflexes, she now has the additional ability to call on the skills of her maternal ancestors. This is not to say that Echo's beginning skills are due to this power. Her fighting skills and know-how are all things she worked for and earned for herself.

Ovid's Metamorphoses, Book III, relates that Echo offended the goddess Hera by keeping her in conversation, thus preventing her from spying on one of Zeus' amours. To punish Echo, Hera deprived her of speech, except for the ability to repeat the last words of another.
The daughter of a member of the Tracksuit Mafia, she lost her hearing as a child. Without the money to enroll in a school for the Deaf, Maya was forced to develop her ability to lipread in order to interact with the hearing world that wouldn't accommodate her.
Originally thought to be learning-disabled, once her teachers notice her ability to duplicate musical performances, they come to realize she is in fact deaf. At age nine, Maya's gangster father works with his partner in crime, Wilson Fisk, AKA Kingpin, who eventually kills him. Fisk becomes her guardian.
The nymph Echo fell in love with Narcissus. However, she had been cursed by Juno for chattering to her to keep Juno from catching her husband cavorting with the other nymphs. Juno's curse left Echo only able to repeat back the last words that were spoken to her.
While Maya may not have supernatural powers, her abilities are more practical. At a young age, she learned how to read lips and is a skilled fighter. Maya learned martial arts, sword, and staff combat, is an expert marksman, and has acrobatic training.
In Echo, Maya slowly realizes that she possesses superpowers that are directly linked to her Choctaw heritage. She frequently has visions of the first Choctaw woman, who saves her people from a collapsing cave and has glowing, cosmic energy in her palms.

The only real standout being Vincent D'Onofrio's excellent portrayal of Kingpin, but even that is tarnished by the writing and a limp wiltering flower of an ending. Echo also suffered from bad editing with the pacing and storyline feeling like they were all over the place.
(**) In the comics, she's called Echo because she has the ability to literally copy the movements and actions of any non-superhuman. Had the MCU version stuck with this, she could fight as well as Shang-Chi, shoot arrows as well as both Hawkeyes, etc.
Echo concludes with a showdown between Maya and her surrogate father, Wilson “Kingpin” Fisk (Vincent D'Onofrio), and instead of avenging her biological father's (Zahn McClarnon) murder, she used her powers to access the treacherous crime lord's mind in hopes of healing the childhood trauma that made him who he is today ...
