Valak may be the most powerful entity thus far in the series, and the "Evil Nun" in Annabelle: Creation implies that it may be responsible for Annabelle's involvement in the series as well. Valak possibly was the one who pushed Janice into the barn and allowed Malthus to possess her.
While Annabelle and The Nun don't have a ton of direct connections to one another, there are several Easter eggs and theories that make audiences believe that maybe these two spin-off films have more to do with each other than meets the eye.

Valak seeks Saint Lucy's eyes for divine power but is ultimately defeated by the power of belief and the blood of Christ. The film hints at a possible connection between Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren, setting up future movies in the Conjuring universe.
