In The Hobbit, both Fili and Kili die. As written by Tolkien: ''Of the twelve companions of Thorin, ten remained. Fili and Kili had fallen defending him with shield and body, for he was their mother's elder brother...'' In addition to Fili and Kili, Thorin also dies in the book.
Their adventures end in the Battle of Five Armies, in which Thorin, Kili, and Fili die. Because of their deaths, Dain Ironfoot, a distant cousin, becomes King under the Mountain.
Fíli was slain with his brother in the Battle of Five Armies, while defending their mortally wounded uncle. After Thorin's death, the brothers would have been the only remaining descendants of Thrór's line and Fíli would have inherited the title of King under the Mountain.
Unfortunately for folks like me, who've come to love not only the handsomeness of Kili actor Aiden Turner's dashing visage, but the character himself, Jackson's film stays true to the books in this sorrowful twist. Kili dies, no ifs, ands, or buts about it.
Their deaths and Thorin's did not end Durin's line, although did end the branch which had Thror, Thrain, and Thorin Oakenshield. Thorin's cousin, Dain Ironfoot, became King after Thorin's death. Dain's son, Thorin Stonehelm, became King after Dain died in the Battle of Dale. The line continued on after that.

Is Fíli Thorin's son?
Fíli and Kíli were nephews of Thorin, who was the elder brother of their mother, Dís. They were also nephews of Frerin, grandsons of Thráin II, and great-grandsons of Thrór. Fíli's most distinguishing feature was his long nose, the longest of any of the Dwarves in Thorin's company.
With Thorin's death in the battle, Dáin became King of Durin's Folk and King under the Mountain, the first not of the main line. After the battle, Dáin thanked the Great Eagles for their timely intervention, crowning their chief with gold and swearing the Dwarves to everlasting friendship with them.
It is believed that after Kili dies, Tauriel becomes a lone rider and never loves again, she was so broken by the experience of losing him. Their love was real, and it was as strong as any other Middle Earth romance story. But this romance doesn't appear in the original book, so where did it come from?
Sometime after the Battle of the Five Armies, Kili wakes up in the Caribbean with Tauriel mysteriously appearing with him. After several years of living together, the two finally marry. Gimli was born in the Ered Luin in the Third Age, son of Glóin. Gimli had wanted to accompany his father on the quest to reclaim Erebor, but at age 62 he was deemed too young. He was a remote descendant of Durin the Deathless, chief of the Seven Fathers of the Dwarves and ancestor of the Longbeards.
During the battle, Thorin was mortally wounded, but he made his peace with Bilbo before he died. When Thorin died, he was buried with the Arkenstone. Orcrist was laid upon his tomb. The blade would glow blue if Orcs should approach; thus, they could not take the Mountain by surprise.
Tauriel truly threw a wrench in Legolas' life when he fell in love with her. She was brave, fierce, and a protective leader of the guard. He was meant to be the dutiful son of King Thranduil, but in loving her, he became a stubborn, masterful archer instead. He loved exploration and adventure over his duties.
Legolas does not marry or have any children, based on the appendix of The Lord of the Rings. Regardless of who his mother was, Legolas is the last of his line. When he sails into the West at the beginning of the Fourth Age, he leaves no family members behind.
No Tauriel and Arwen are absolutely not the same. Arwen was the daughter of Elrond Half-elven, granddaughter to Galadriel and Celeborn, betrothed to Aragorn. She was the loveliest elf-maid since Lúthien Tinuviel.
Early life. Born in TA 2341 of the Third Age, Tauriel was the daughter of Tauressar and Calmiriel. During that year when she was born, her parents went on a scouting mission to the southern borders of Mirkwood until they were ambushed by Orcs that probably spawned from the old fortress of Dol Guldur.
After the battle, the Arkenstone was placed by Bard upon Thorin's chest within his tomb deep underneath the Lonely Mountain, and so was returned to the earth at last.
At the end of the novel, The Hobbit, Balin has formed such a great relationship with Bilbo that he is the only dwarf to visit him with Gandalf a second time. Later in life, Balin led an expedition to re-colonize the lost dwarven kingdom of Moria. He was successful, and declared Lord of Moria.
Gimli is the son of Glóin who is introduced in The Hobbit as a member of Thorin Oakenshield's company, also being one of his four third cousins. Thorin himself is a direct descendant of Durin I, even becoming the King of Durin's Folk in his lifetime.
