In his history, in fact, Godzilla has been both the villain and the hero. The King of the Monsters has been shown to have a certain degree of compassion for humanity, seeing their flaws and potential. In these traits, he saw a species worthy of protection and fought his 15 enemies numerous times to ensure our survival.
As the series progressed, so did Godzilla, changing into a less destructive and more heroic character. Ghidorah (1964) was the turning point in Godzilla's transformation from villain to hero, by pitting him against a greater threat to humanity, King Ghidorah. Godzilla has since been viewed as an anti-hero.
Unlike most of his previous incarnations, Godzilla is never outright hostile or dangerous towards humans every time he crossed paths with them as he is a gentle giant like his close friend Mothra and his former rival Kong.
This is why Godzilla immediately recognized Kong's presence on Earth as that of his ultimate, instinctual rival, and why it was inevitable that the two would fight. Kong didn't bow before Godzilla like the other Titans did in King of the Monsters, and more than that, Kong is inherently a threat to Godzilla's kingship.
Godzilla, being the territorial and aggressive Titan that he is, attacked Kong in the sea and in Hong Kong to protect his territory since he sensed that he was another alpha who could be primed for a takeover. This is on top of the long rivalry between them.
Anguirus was reintroduced in Destroy All Monsters as an ally and best friend of Godzilla living with him on Monsterland, a role that Anguirus maintained throughout Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla vs. Megalon, and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla.
Instead, Godzilla acknowledged Kong as an equal and he returned to the sea. While it's impossible to know for sure what's in the hearts and minds of giant monsters, Kong apparently earned Godzilla's respect so the lizard left him alone.
In films that depict Godzilla as an aggressor, we rarely know why Godzilla is angry enough to invade Tokyo. Presumably, he is provoked by war, pollution, industrialization, and of course, the dropping of the A-bomb. Loud noises, bad smells, and humanity's general disregard for the natural world invoke his wrath.
Indeed, nor could they ever. The Godzilla x Kong: The News Empire version of Godzilla is 177 metres long and weighs over 90,000 tonnes. Kong stands 103 metres tall and weighs over 50,000 tonnes. Land-living animals of this size simply aren't possible.
Although the movie doesn't have much blood and gore, it does have violent and scary scenes, frightening monsters, emotionally intense moments and scenes that show children in danger. Godzilla never feared any threat that comes his way whether its the JSDF or some other god that comes his way. But there were times where he was puzzled when he sees a creature that he is not used to seeing.
In the 1954 film, Godzilla is portrayed as a tragic monster who lashed out at humanity by destroying any boats that he encountered and later rampaging across and destroying Tokyo in retaliation for the destruction of his home and death of his family by an American H-bomb test.
Kong is portrayed as a tragic and sympathetic animal and lives a very solitary and difficult existence, constantly being attacked by the ferocious giant creatures that live on Skull Island.
The Showa Series Godzilla are all considered friendly all the way up to 1975. The Heisei Series Godzilla is classified as evil as when it will not stop or anything that comes in its path. He pretty much destroy everything.
The rivalry between Godzilla and King Kong is well noted within their established mythos, including and especially the current MonsterVerse canon, but there's one kaiju Godzilla hates far more than Kong (or any other Titan, for that matter): King Ghidorah - and there's only one reason as to why.

Godzilla was the actual winner of both battles between Godzilla and King Kong, but after Kong helped him defeat Mechagodzilla, Godzilla left Kong alone after the primate king dropped the ax. When Kong did that, Godzilla knew Kong was no longer a threat to him, and both seemingly accepted each other.
It was made clear from the onset that winning was always going to be an uphill battle for Kong. Though the ape struck the first blow in Godzilla vs. Kong, it was demonstrated early on that Godzilla had him beat in a contest of raw power. His atomic breath put Kong at an even greater disadvantage.
After provoking him with gunfire, Maia and the Apex team's HEAV is crushed by Kong. Kong, Andrews, Jia, and Lind ascend to Hong Kong, where Kong engages Godzilla in a ferocious final battle in which Godzilla emerges victorious, leaving Kong nearly dead.
Whereas Goku learned the Kaio-Ken from King Kai, Godzilla obtained his pink form from absorbing the DNA of a fellow kaiju named Tiamat. Differing power-up circumstances aside, Krichevsky confirmed that— like Goku's Kaio-Ken — Godzilla's pink form is temporary.
