That may seem to be an obvious statement, but there is a welcome consistency with this second go-around of Sony's accidental horror franchise.
Neither of these versions is too great, none of them is as good as the first Escape Room movie. But still, the extended cut version is BY FAR better story wise. The extended cut develops the main story behind the rooms and kinda moves the story forward.
Escape Room: Tournament of Champions might not have been as much of a hit as the first movie, but the horror sequel gave viewers plenty to talk about when it came out on digital platforms. The main version that was released to watch at home ended up being an extended version of the movie.
Is it okay to watch escape room 2 without watching 1?
There are two movies and an extended cut; you can watch them in any order. We recommend the first film in the series if you are looking for a good escape room movie. However, if you are only interested in watching an escape room movie for seeing one, the second film is worth watching.
Both films are horror movies about puzzle-box death traps. Characters are in near-constant peril, with tension, threat, and screaming. Some characters die in brutal ways (electrocution, quicksand, acid rain, etc.), and various injuries are shown. There are also flashbacks to deaths in the first movie.
Not only does the Escape Room 2 alternate ending reduce the near-supernatural omnipotence of Minos effectively by making the movie more about Claire, but it also very directly sets up the antagonist for Escape Room 3.
Some escape rooms are horror-themed, such as escaping a zombie apocalypse or solving the mystery of a haunted house. Even still, they're designed to be fun, not genuinely terrifying. You might get a good spook, but you'll never be actually afraid for your safety! Is horror not your style?

Claire locks the Minos employees inside the control room, and suggests Zoey report her findings to the police. After Zoey escapes to the original location where she finds Ben in an ambulance, it is revealed that Claire was evil all along.
Holland Roden plays punk-rock Rachel Ellis, one of the champions that Zoey and Ben meets in the subway. She reveals almost the end of the movie that she was born with microdeletion in one of her genes which affects sensation and causing her not to feel physical pain.
Because in the case of Escape Room 2, the alternate version is totally different to the one released in cinemas, with a brand-new ending and one major character cut from it completely.
