Josh begins to act strange in 'Insidious Chapter 2' because he is under the possessed state of an evil and malicious poltergeist, now living inside his body.
Josh was not possessed during the first movie but only towards the end of it. The story was something like this: A spirit was trying to possess him in his childhood, but Elise saved him. Then when he went into the other dimension to save his child, he got possessed by that spirit which was towards the end of the movie.
Josh is able to travel beyond the Red Door and frees his son, but the red-faced demon isn't willing to let Dalton just walk away. In order for Dalton to safely escape the Further, Josh must use his body to block the Red Door, sacrificing himself for his son, not unlike what his own dad did.
Elise saves Josh and appears to destroy Michelle's spirit, which stops the possessed Josh from murdering his family in the real world. Carl and Josh escape and Dalton leads them back to the living world, allowing Josh to finally regain control of his body.

Who killed Elise in Insidious?
As she packs up for the night, Josh hands her his childhood photos, but as she takes them, she gives Josh a strange and startled look, and whips out her camera and snaps a photo of Josh. Furious, Josh goes in a rage and violently strangles Elise to death.
Ultimately, the events of Insidious 2 are the reason why Josh and Renai got divorced. At the end of Insidious, it seems as though Josh has successfully rescued Dalton from The Further, however, in a shocking twist, he murders paranormal expert Elise.
Elise Returns As A Ghost In Insidious: The Red Door's Ending
Given when the movie takes place, Elise can only appear at the end of Insidious: The Red Door as a ghost. She's already been dead over a decade after Josh strangled her when he was possessed by the Black Bride at the end of Insidious.
Elise is killed at the end of the first movie by the Bride in Black, who has successfully possessed Josh. She reappears in the second movie as a spirit in the Further, where she helps Josh get back to his physical body and stop Parker from killing his family.
In 2018's Insidious: The Last Key, the prequel to the Lamberts' tragedy had her venturing into The Further to save her niece, Melissa. But as they fled the supernatural prison, Elise made a massive error at her old New Mexico home.
The Lamberts have gotten their happy ending and kept their demons at bay, but the Lipstick-Face Demon didn't get vanquished, nor did the other restless souls trapped in The Further.
The Red Door's ending has Josh rescuing Dalton from the Further and seeing the ghost of Elise (Lin Shaye) to wrap the story. Furthermore, the door is sealed, shutting the Lipstick Face Demon away.
But all is not well--Josh dies in the Further while holding the door, his physical body in the real world apparently following suit. Yes, that makes him the Hodor of Insidious.
Renai reveals that this has all happened before, and Josh and Dalton have both had their memories suppressed. She divorced him because the children were scared of him, remembering that he had tried to kill them and not understanding that he was possessed at the time.

The father-son duo successfully exit the hellish afterlife they were in, but not everything's done. Elise notices something off about Josh and takes a picture of him. At that point, she learns that Josh is actually being possessed by the Bride in Black. Before Elise can react, the spirit murders her.
Why doesn't Josh like his picture taken Insidious?
The more photographs taken of Josh, the closer the shadowy woman begins to get to Josh until she is inches away from him, explaining his fear of photos. Elise suggests that Josh should use his ability to find and help return Dalton's soul, to which Josh agrees.
The demon chases them to the red door and Josh stays behind to keep it shut so Dalton will be safe. Dalton returns to his body and paints over his red door painting with black paint, which in turns seals the real door and The Further. Josh meets his father's spirit, who guides him back to the living world.
Elise is unable to complete the reading, she stops after hearing a demonic presence who threatens to kill her. She warns Quinn that if, "you call out to one of the dead,all of them can hear you." Soon after the reading, Quinn begins to hear noises at night and notices more and more supernatural events occuring.
At first, the investigation leads to the reveal that Garza is actually a serial killer who has been keeping a young girl chained in his basement; however, after a crazed Garza is killed by Specs, it's further revealed that Garza was a puppet for Key Face, and that the demon had once possessed Elise's father, turning ...
Insidious: The Red Door is a hot mess attempting to shoehorn in a plot between Father and Son. We get to waste time watching scenes while the Son is screwing around in college and going to frat parties. It completely misses what made the first three films great and feels like a flat and boring film.
Synopsis. In flashback, we see Josh (Patrick Wilson) Lambert, as a kid, is having trouble with the old lady with blood red lipstick, who killed Elise at the end of the first film. Elise and a man named Carl, are summoned to help with the problem, because Josh's mother, Lorraine, is worried.
The Big Picture. Insidious is not based on a true story, so you don't have to worry about real-life hauntings like in The Conjuring series. The inspiration for Insidious came from Wan and Whannell's desire to make a horror film about astral projection.
