However, while the script and storytelling might not have been that well-received, Dominion's special effects and visuals of the dinosaurs are still a spectacle worth seeing. In an interview with THR, Trevorrow explained why Jurassic World Dominion chose to use animatronics over CGI.
Instead, the animal was portrayed entirely through CGI. Previous Jurassic World films depicted the T. rex with an emaciated physical appearance compared with the first Jurassic Park.

Production background. In the first film, the raptors were created through a combination of animatronics by Winston and CGI by Industrial Light & Magic (ILM). A fully functioning raptor head took Winston four months to create.
A large part of this was the Steven Spielberg effect. His touch on the film gave it something special that no amount of CGI, or bigger, scarier dinosaurs could ever replicate or improve upon. He had the human and emotional touch of a well-directed cast that added the dramatic layer to a film that simply didn't need it.

That said, *none* of the dinosaurs presented in Jurassic World Dominion are actually all that paleo-accurate. For example; both Pyroraptor and Atrociraptor are several times the size of their real-life counterparts, and while Pyroraptor would have had feathers, the kind depicted do not match those on the fossils.
Did they use practical effects in Jurassic World Dominion?
So we did actually have a practical animatronic version of that puppet that wasn't necessarily made for screen, but it allowed David Vickery and his team to photograph that head being puppeteered ... We put wind machines on it so that they could actually look at how the feathers might move in different atmospheres.
But we had 22 puppeteers operating 14 practical puppets. It was a logistical brain bomb, but it was our job to make sure it ran as smoothly as possible. What is this? There's a certain fluidity and personality that we expect from Jurassic dinosaurs, going all the way back to the 1993 original.
