Although the magical eye was seen as a cameo on the door of Dolores Umbridge's office following Moody's death in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, there is no indication of Umbridge receiving it as a gift.
During the first wizarding war, Alastor Moody lost his right eye during a clash with the Death Eaters. He had a magical eye inserted into the socket as a replacement.
In the fourth Harry Potter film, Barty Crouch Jr. is enlisted by Voldemort to infiltrate Hogwarts to get closer to Harry Potter. He does this by assuming the identity of ex-Auror, Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody and taking the position of the Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.
However, these actions would eventually give way to paranoia in his later years, as he never knew who might be after him for revenge. Mad-Eye Moody's encounters with Death Eaters and dark wizards left many physical marks on him, including scars and a piece of his nose missing.
As do most wizards and witches from Britain, Moody attended Hogwarts as a child, reportedly being sorted into the Hufflepuff house. He was extremely studious and earned exceptional grades during his time at the prestigious school, with apparent pressure from his parents to achieve the academic success he did.
Born in the late 1920s to Muggle parents, Myrtle Warren started her Hogwarts life in the early 1940s, where she was sorted into Ravenclaw. She had no friends, and was bullied relentlessly because of her glasses and acne. But she would soon have all of eternity to get her own back.
Harry describes Umbridge to Sirius Black, saying that she's vile enough to be a Death Eater, despite not being one. Umbridge is also depicted to be a prejudiced person, despising half-breeds and Muggle-born witches and wizards to the point of firing Hagrid due to his half-giant birth status.
A fake eye belonging to Alastor 'Mad-Eye' Moody, the enchanted device had an electric blue iris and could rotate 360 degrees in the wearer's head. The eye was able to see through anything, including the back of Moody's own head and even invisibility cloaks, and was the reason that Moody became known as 'Mad-Eye.
Fletcher panicked, crying out, and Moody tried to stop him, but Mundungus Disapparated, leaving Moody vulnerable to attack. Voldemort fired a Killing Curse when Mundungus Disapparated, and hit Moody in the face, killing him. Moody fell backwards off his broom, and about a thousand feet to the ground.
In the film version, Barty Crouch Jr. has the habit of licking his lips when threatened, in a snake-like way, to which he occasionally shows while under the disguise of Alastor Moody. This action led to him giving himself away to his father following the second task of the Triwizard Tournament.
He kept Moody alive under the Imperius Curse to continue harvesting hair for the Polyjuice Potion, and to question him about his personality, behaviour and knowledge, in order to make the act more convincing.
In July 1997, Moody was killed by Lord Voldemort during the Battle of the Seven Potters. Moody's corpse was recovered by the Death Eaters, and his magical eye was somehow taken by Dolores Umbridge, who used it to keep track of her subordinates in the British Ministry of Magic.
Throughout the series, he is an anti-hero due to overly-cautious and paranoid side when it comes about his personal security, but anyone who dies fighting Lord Voldemort himself isn't a villain, that aside even though Moody may look crazy as all heck but he's not a bad guy.
His fears were assuaged in 1944, when he received a Hogwarts letter and began attending the school, where he was sorted into Hufflepuff, but he never forgot about his sister. He attended Hogwarts around the same time as future mediwitch Poppy Pomfrey.
Did Snape know Harry was under the Invisibility Cloak?
Dumbledore was doing James a favour by helping him pass down the Invisibility Cloak to his son Harry. Snape definitely knew because in book 4 when Harry sees crouch in Snapes office, he's in his invisibility cloak. As soon as snape sees the golden egg and the map he says 'potters here' to mad eye. Potters here.
In 1994, Moody accepted Dumbledore's offer to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts for a year, but was captured and imprisoned by Barty Crouch Jr., who impersonated him during the 1994–1995 school year, in order to send Harry Potter to Lord Voldemort.
Apparently, Umbridge's mother was a Muggle and her brother was a Squib – a source of huge embarrassment for the family. Perhaps their abandonment and retreat back into the Muggle world had such a huge impact on Umbridge that it became the catalyst for her Muggleborn-targeted cruelty later on in life.
If you have only seen the films, you might be surprised to hear that it wasn't Cho Chang who betrayed Dumbledore's Army to Professor Umbridge – it was Marietta Edgecombe. A friend of Cho's and a fellow Ravenclaw, Marietta (reluctantly) joined the DA.
Although Umbridge was not a Death Eater, and had no direct contact with Lord Voldemort, she showed that she was fairly in line with their goals. This was due to Umbridge's callous nature and her prejudiced beliefs, both of which were similar to Death Eater behavior.
He was a wizard of the royal court as an adult. He was executed by an improper decapitation, after he had a magical mishap with Lady Grieve. He tried to straighten her teeth but it backfired and she grew tusks. Since then, he became the resident ghost of Gryffindor Tower at the Hogwarts Castle.
