Laura Hasn't Slept is a 2020 American short horror film written, directed, and co-produced by Parker Finn. The film stars Caitlin Stasey and Lew Temple. It would later serve as inspiration for Finn's feature-length horror film Smile (2022); a continuation in which Stasey briefly reprised her role.
Smile was based on Finn's original short film from 2019 titled Laura Hasn't Slept, which starred Reign's Caitlin Stasey as Laura Weaver and The Walking Dead's Lew Temple as Dr. Parsons. It served as a prequel to the feature-length adaptation, with Stasey briefly reprising her role.
Her mind shut down and gave her a false happy ending. That is what the Smile ending explained. Forget about Rose leaving and believing she had escaped her fate. The trick here was making the audience believe she had won, and then pulling back the curtains and revealing she never escaped and was doomed.

Is Smile connected to another movie?
Smile 2, the sequel to the breakout horror film, has been confirmed by Paramount and is set to have a theatrical release. The release date for Smile 2 is October 18, 2024, approximately two years after the release of the original film.
Titled “Laura Hasn't Slept,” the short is very much in the same vibe as Smile and showcases much of the same foreboding cinematography and spine-tingling suspense beats.
Fully possessed by the demon, Rose douses herself in gasoline and sets herself on fire — just as the real Joel bursts inside her home and witnesses her death, becoming the next victim.
So, the entity uses Rose's body to pour gasoline all over the psychiatrist, lighting a match just as Joel comes through the door. Rose's body is smiling while she burns away, and we can see in Joel's eyes he will be scarred for life by that disturbing suicide.

In the end, Smile has all three of those endings. Rose brutally stabs a terrified patient to death at her hospital in front of her screaming boss, Morgan (Kal Penn). But that turns out to be a dream she's having while passed out in her car in front of the hospital, and she flees the hospital and Morgan in horror.
The ending of the film is particularly sad since it proves that as soon as Joel agrees to help Rose figure out what's happening, he isn't able to extract himself from her, and he will never break free.
The book ends with Laura choosing to be with Nacho, but that is after Massimo holds her against her will, drugs her and tries to get her pregnant. It's not really a surprise she escaped with Nacho in that scenario. The epilogue shows they have a daughter together, while Massimo has given up and agreed to a divorce.
In the book series, Laura was pregnant when she was shot, but in the movies, she was pregnant when she was involved in the crash at the end of the first movie. Either way, the result is the same as Laura ends up losing her baby as a result of the traumatic event.
A Mexican standoff ensues with Adriano holding Laura hostage, as well as taunting his brother about Laura's miscarriage. Before Massimo can deal with that revelation though, Laura tries to break free and is shot by Anna, who is shot by Nacho in turn. Massimo then shoots Adriano before he can shoot him.
The film sustains a strong sense of foreboding and threat throughout, with central themes of trauma and death. There are frequent jump scares and some very strong violence. This movie is incredibly scary and disturbing at the same time.
Why Rose Dies In Smile's Ending. Rose dies in Smile's ending because she was only able to overpower the entity once. She had enough fight in her to take on the gangly demonic monstrosity and even appeared to kill it, shattering a lantern over its head.
Rose initially panics, but starts smiling evilly, presumably because that her racist beliefs about black people would be right, as Chris would end up acting like a beast. Chris, either now unwilling or too exhausted to kill his former girlfriend, stops strangling her.
There's obviously a reason why the smile demon appears as a giant, looming depiction of Rose's Mom during the final act. One of the most unsettling moments in "Smile" takes place just before that when Rose's trusted therapist, Dr. Northcott (Robin Weigert) reveals herself to be the demon.
As Joel walks in, Rose is wearing that familiar creepy smile and has covered herself in gasoline – about to light a match. So no, Rose does not survive in Smile and even worse, it seems the curse has found a way to keep itself going, with Joel now presumably set to be its next victim.
Laura is clearly not in a good state of mind, to the point that she has refused to sleep for several days, due to a recurring nightmare she has about a creepy smiling man who threatens to show her "his true face." In Smile, the demon moves through each witness of the smiling suicide and then to the next after 7 days. This chain effect adds to the fear factor by heightening the anticipation among audience members of when the next person will arrive, and who will die next.
