The reincarnation cycle can only be broken if the Avatar is killed while in the Avatar State, Raava is removed from the Avatar and severely injured, or the Avatar Spirit is compromised by a spiritual infection.
Was Korra able to reconnect with the previous avatars at the end of the series? No, she broke the cycle and all her past 1000 or so lives are disconnected, and remained that way.
In other words, Azula's lightning strike severed Aang from the Avatar State and a likely equally painful blunt trauma repaired the disconnection. Avatar Korra, however, lost her connection to the past lives of the Avatars not when Raava was removed from her, but when Raava was being attacked by the dark energy.

Like his counterpart, Raava, Vaatu is effectively immortal, having lived for tens of thousands of years. If he is overcome by Raava, he can gradually reform himself from the vestigial darkness within her.
The only way to explain it is plot. Throughout the season, Unalaq was presented as a highly spiritual person who valued keeping spirits and humans in harmony. Vaatu is the complete opposite of Raava, as: While Vaatu is the spirit of darkness and chaos, Raava is the spirit of light and peace. Vaatu is Near Pure Evil while Raava is Near Pure Good.
Only three villains in the entire series (Hiroshi, Kuvira, and Unalaq) were able to deceive Korra about their intentions, with the latter exclusively deriving usage from his manipulation. His diabolical prowess was so prodigious that he was even able to convince the Avatar to join him over her own father.
