Like many Tuscan folk tales, Pinocchio has important moral lessons for children: e.g., disobedience does not pay, telling lies is seldom prudent, and boys who love and take care of their parents will be rewarded. Its pedagogical mission notwithstanding, the story remains a timeless classic.
Yes, the real story of Pinocchio is indeed very dark and is meant to serve as a lesson for kids who are naughty. Collodi originally planned to show that Pinocchio, as a result of his carelessness, loses his life to the sly and evil Cat and Fox who hang him and steal his gold.
The fact that Pinocchio is a wooden boy is a metaphor for the inauthentic state the hero and ourselves are in at the beginning of the adventure or journey. Psychologically, this metaphor is incredibly valid, indicating the incomplete condition of our conscious selves at this early age of our existence.

After all of the poor decisions that he makes throughout the story, Pinocchio eventually learns his lesson. He does the right thing by saving his father and earns the chance to be a real boy! From this, we learn that no matter how many mistakes you make, it is never too late to do the right thing.
When Pinocchio shows himself as selfless, truthful, obedient, and brave, the blue fairy transforms him into a real boy. The lesson that children can learn from this is that we can lead a happy life by being truthful and changing ourselves for the better.

It was revealed earlier in the film that the cursed water transforms its drinker into an animal symbolic of his or her behavior. Therefore, the boys' "jackass" behavior causes them to actually physically transform into jackasses.

Arguably the darkest film in the entire Disney animated canon is the 1996 film The Hunchback of Notre Dame. It's implied multiple times that Pinocchio is the soul of Geppetto's dead son, but he never fully regains those memories nor transforms back into that boy. He get's to be Pinocchio, and it's only at the end of the film that he can be a real boy by being himself.
