Mera is the former Queen of Dimension Aqua, Queen of Atlantis, and wife of DC Comics superhero Aquaman. Mera also has a twin sister named Hila, who turned to villany. In her first chronological appearance, Mera is shown to be fleeing the criminal Leron after he usurps control of her kingdom.
The two primary long-running character to have taken up the position are Tula and Lorena Marquez. A futuristic version of Aquagirl named Mareena was introduced in the DC Animated Universe.
