Smile, by Raina Telgemeier - wonderful graphic novel for ages 9 - 13. So many kids are drawn to graphic novels and comic books - they love how visually stimulating they are, they love the laughs and the drama. They love reading books with fewer words but all the ideas!

I have a lot to say about it but first I'll just tell if the rating it has is appropriate and what age and up I'd give it. This film is rated R (18 in the UK) for a reason. The gore here is not messing around and it definitely justifies an R rating. I would say 14 and up though (depending on the kid) in most cases.
Although Smile is not a violent story, there are moments of teeth-related gore that might gross out some readers, especially when Raina falls and loses her front teeth and leaves a pool of blood on the asphalt.

This film is far from as graphic and disturbing as Ari Aster's “Hereditary” and “Midsommar,” but there are still some disturbing scenes that make members of the audience want to plug their ears and squeeze their eyes shut. The jump scares are also intense but there aren't so many as to overdo it.

Parents agreed with the same age range and rating, but kids said that it was okay for age 13 and gave it a 5 star rating.
