With Kate unsure of what to do next, Carter suggests that they make for a nearby Russian outpost approximately fifty miles away. As they prepare to leave, Kate notices that Carter is missing his left earring and determines that he is a Thing.
The Thing is an extremely hostile hive-minded shape-shifting extraterrestrial multi-organism and the titular main antagonist of the 1982 science-fiction film The Thing, its prequel, video-games and literature. The Thing has the ability to assimilate other life forms in order to survive and spread.
Lars, now revealed to have survived uninfected hiding in the building where Derek and Carter attacked him, demands at gunpoint that Matias show his teeth. Lars' dog, thought dead, emerges and runs away. Realizing that the dog is a Thing, Lars orders Matias to give chase in the helicopter.
Instead it's far more plausible that Norris was the one first assimilated during the dog encounter. The later assimilation of Bennings and the dogs suggests it is a relatively quick process, with the alien able to create nearly perfect copies of both in a matter of minutes. With Norris, it had nearly an entire night.
With no other choice, Childs sacrifices himself to destroy the creature by blowing himself up while MacReady escaped the sub in a capsule. However, it would be later revealed that Childs was assimilated by the creature, who would later reveal itself to MacReady in Argentina.

Was Childs human at the end of The Thing?
By the end of John Carpenter's The Thing, only MacReady (Kurt Russell) and Childs (Keith David) are left standing. For decades, audiences have wondered whether or not Childs was human in the movie's ending, but it is not certain that either one of them is human.
The most common read on the ending of "The Thing" is that Childs is most likely a Thing, and there is some logic to that line of thinking. Childs disappears for the entirety of the finale until the very end when he comes back with a pretty bogus excuse of why he was gone.
Under the cover of darkness, its head splits into a three-jawed maw and spits against nearest dog with a jet of fluid, then mutates into a grotesque spider-like form and begins to violently assimilate the sled dogs.
Palmer wears his shirt during The Thing's first half, leading most to believe that it's his and that he got assimilated around this time. And if that's the case, Norris is the only character left as the possible first victim. But still, it's almost impossible to know who died before all others.
The most debated aspect of The Thing concerns its two survivors, MacReady and Childs. The events of the film see every other person in Antarctic Outpost 31 killed, and the horror movie's final survivors are left in the impossible — but practically inevitable — situation where neither man knows if the other is infected.
The final scene of the 2011 version even leads directly into the opening shots of 1982's The Thing. As predicted, the vast majority of the prequel's characters are dead by the time credits roll, though Winstead's Kate has managed to (at least temporarily) stop the monster from escaping Antarctica in its spaceship.
It's unclear when Palmer and Norris assimilated, but it's possible that one of them picked up the keys after Windows dropped them, destroyed the blood supply, and returned the keys somehow. With this in mind, most fans have pointed their fingers at Palmer, accusing him of the sabotage.
The film was about the end of the world. Its bleakness was the reason it wasn't a success at the time, but I think also why it has endured. In fact the film was an enormous failure. I got fired because of it and was out of work for a while, but slowly its reputation changed.
Trivia. It is likely that Juliette was attacked and assimilated by Griggs in the bathroom and that the fillings and the blood in the shower belong to her. This is the first and so far only female Thing in both films.
Trivia. It is unknown if the form of the Original Thing is its true form or just one from another planet it assimilated before arriving on Earth. It may also be a monstrous combination of traits from various extraterrestrial lifeforms the Thing had "sampled" earlier, rather than imitating any single organism as a whole ...
MacReady and the others later check on Blair, who is having canned food for dinner and seems to prepare to hang himself with a noose to prevent the Thing from taking him.
The dog thing basically infected Norris first and then it went on to infected Palmer shortly afterwards. Bennings: no I am not gonna bother telling you how he got infected, because we already see that. Blair: now I can only think of 2 possibilities of how Blair was infected, and I know when he ended up infected.
In the show, she distracts an incoming pack of infected, which leads us to a rather unique moment. A runner spots Tess and instead of violently charging her as we've seen infected do before, it calmly walks over and gives her an open-mouthed kiss to allow tendrils of the evolved cordyceps fungi to pass into her.
The most common question that has arisen is: could it really happen? The simple answer is yes – but not in the way we have recently seen unfolding on TV. Fungi that we currently regard as posing significant threats to human life do not cause disease on the scale we have seen in The Last of Us.
There's a few cases where if you sneak through an infected area you'll find them chewing on a dead person. The reason they cry and moan is they're in pain. Even though their brain is being destroyed they're still alive and have an active nervous system. Any conscious and aware being in pain will show it.
The revelation came as Carpenter was asked about comments made by Dean Cundey, who served as cinematographer on The Thing. Cundey said that there was a specific lighting in the eyes of human characters. Using this logic, it would appear that MacReady is still human but Childs isn't.
MacReady then hands Childs the bottle of whiskey. He drinks from it and MacReady smiles to himself. Now the popular theory is that Macready had filled the bottle with gasoline. As Childs drinks from it and there is no reaction this is why the pilot is smiling.
