The sequel is set four years after the events of the first film and a decade before the events of The Conjuring, seeing the aftermath of Frenchie's (Jonas Bloquet) possession by the demonic entity Valak. Frenchie is also revealed to be Maurice, who dies after a failed exorcism in the first Conjuring movie.
During the chaotic final battle with Valak, the demon possessed Frenchie while he fought to save Sister Irene's life, and the young man was doomed from that point.
Valak appears in multiple forms throughout the Conjuring movies, mainly taking the shape of a Catholic nun with eerie features. However, it has also appeared as the Crooked Man and its original form, Valak the Defiler.

Frenchie, who has been softened in Amazon's The Boys series adaptation, also has an unnaturally sensitive nose allowing him to track people down like a sniffer dog. How he got his powers remains a mystery, but it is likely that Butcher gave them to him when he recruited him.
He is described as having a strong connection with both Female and Billy, however, he has killer instincts and his anger is hard to reign in once provoked. Similar to Female of the Species, the Frenchman's use of Compound V has given him abilities such as increased strength, smell and increased durability.

Furthermore, while the demon that possesses the Annabelle doll isn't Valak, Valak conceivably helps this evil spirit complete its goal of possessing Janice due to how it temporarily takes the form of a nun-like figure.
