Personality. Mace Windu, like any Jedi was cruel and malicious and did not care for others that weren't on his side or worth to the Republic. He was also very delusional and thought the Jedi were "heroes" and Confederacy of Independent Systems were "villains".
Windu's actions led Palpatine to brand the Jedi as traitors to the Republic. The chancellor executed Order 66, forcing the clone troopers across the galaxy to turn against and kill their Jedi leaders, marking the fall of the Jedi Order.
Yes not only was Mace Windu a powerful force user but he was also an accomplished duelist and fighter. Mace Windu is considered one of the most powerful Jedi Masters during the Clone Wars.
Windu has created and fully mastered Vaapad, a variant of Form VII. Yoda mastered the original variant known as Juyo. Both of them were able to fight with Palpatine on equal ground, matching him blow for blow. It is stated that Yoda beat Mace in a sparring match.

So Mace Windu was born around either 86 or 83 BBY making him 54 years old when we meet him in The Phantom Menace and 67 years old when he died in Revenge of the Sith. I actually like this change because not only help out the age difference between him and his apprentice Depa Billaba.
Why does Count Dooku call Mace Windu's old friend?
Before Dooku was a Sith, he was an esteemed Jedi Council member. As Windu's senior by 30 years, he saw Mace grow up and mature in the Jedi Order. That's why he referred to Windu as an “old friend” in this comic.
Yoda had to shoulder that decision for years. However, he ultimately understood the importance of life, and the power he could have used to defeat Dooku would have been much better used to preserve two lives. Over the years, Dooku would commit countless atrocities and also suffer incredibly embarrassing defeats.
