In the 2000 live-action film starring Jim Carrey, Max is played by six different mixed-breed dogs. All were rescued from shelters. In the 1966 animated film, his long muzzle looks similar to that of a Beagle, and his long body shape is reminiscent of a Dachshund.

Is Max a true story?
Although most parts of the movie are indeed dramatizations, it can nicely recreate scenes inspired by real-life events. The scene where Max sits by Kyle's coffin draped with the flag is reminiscent to a photo of Jon Tumilson's funeral ceremony a few years ago which went viral on the social medias.
After Max makes it home, he makes the tea and gives it to his master which Grinch kindly rewards him by sleeping him in bed and Max has a cold at the end.
