Smaug. Smaug was considered to be the last "great" dragon of Middle-earth. Sauron allied with Smaug and intended to use the dragon's powers against the people of Middle-earth. But before that could happen, Smaug was slain by Bard the Bowman.
The Extended Edition of The Desolation of Smaug confirms Gandalf the Grey's fears of Smaug being in league with Sauron as Thráin reveals in Dol Guldur. Should the Dragon have survived its attack upon Lake-town, then the Dark Lord would have used him to devastating effect against the Free Peoples in the North.
The last of the great Dragons, Smaug held allegiance to no one, with sloth and greed being his only masters. Near the end of the Watchful Peace, however, Smaug secretly became the ally of Sauron, who had enticed him with promises of wealth and power.
Smaug hadn't hatched yet. Sauron was still hiding out in Dol Guldur, pretending to be a necromancer, in the year Smaug was killed. For many centuries before that, he was in a weakened, disembodied state. He was in no position to arrange alliances with anybody.
Sauron was portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch through voice and motion capture in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and the upcoming The Battle of the Five Armies. Sauron is the overarching antagonist of the trilogy, given that he made a pact with Smaug and is Azog's boss and leader.

Was Smaug created by Morgoth?
Smaug is Not The Strongest Dragon
That title falls to Ancalagon the Black, the largest dragon ever to have existed in Middle-earth. He was bred by Morgoth during the First Age to fight for the Dark Lord during his campaign of terror.
Despite Smaug's great size, strength and Durable hide, Sauron's Dark Magic, Powerful Weaponry and Great Intelligence ultimately triumphed over Smaug. Sauron was immune to Smaug's fire as Sauron has control over fire and had adapted to it.
Smaug could easily have cut through the armies of Mordor, and delayed the invasion of Middle-earth by years. So it wasn't in Sauron's interest to take on the dragon, but that doesn't mean he saw it as a lost cause, as he fully planned on creating an alliance.

Gandalf's main reason for supporting Thorin's quest in The Hobbit was to eliminate the threat of the dragon Smaug, who would be a powerful ally for Sauron. Despite popular belief, the Balrog known as Durin's Bane was more powerful than Smaug in Middle-earth, being a literal, primordial demon.
Described as a "long-worm", although this imprecise term seems to be more of an expression rather than a separate taxonomic group. Smaug — the last great dragon of Middle-earth, slain by Bard of Esgaroth.
Summary. If Smaug had survived The Hobbit, the events of The Lord of the Rings would have played out very differently. If Smaug and Sauron had become allies, they would have been nearly unstoppable. Smaug might not have cooperated with the Dark Lord.
Peter Jackson certainly makes the assertion in the theatrical and extended editions of the Hobbit movies that Smaug and Sauron are not only well aware of each other, but are planning to ally with each other.
Meanwhile, a few faithful Númenóreans, led by Elendil, were saved from the flood, and they founded Gondor and Arnor in Middle-earth. Sauron still considered them his hated enemies and he launched a pre-emptive attack on Gondor in S.A. 3429.
In the Third Age, he probably considered Saruman as his worst enemy, until he became corrupted. And he remained a threat, seeking the One Ring for himself. But he'd then have seen Gandalf as the chief problem. Someone who constantly caused his plans to fail.
If he is using black arrow. The black arrow is just a normal arrow so that wouldn't have any effect. Bard only knew where to aim because he could understand the thrush that heard Bilbo talk about it. So Legolas would only be able to kill Smaug through sheer luck or he would have to see the gap in the gemstone armor.
Smaug's dragon-fine would not have been hot enough to destroy the One Ring. The malevolence that Sauron put inside of the Ring could only be destroyed in the Cracks of Doom, so Frodo was compelled to make the journey to Mordor.
Does the gemstone have magical powers or curse that makes the Dwarves covet it with an almost obsessive passion? There was no indication in The Hobbit that the Arkenstone held any magical powers or any curse. It was not the Jewel itself that set Thorin into a frenzy but it was something inside of Thorin himself.
As a Valar, Morgoth led a whole slew of Balrogs in the First Age, but because Sauron was only a Maia, the Balrog would have had no loyalty to him. He was his own master in Moria, and no Dark Lord was going to ruin that.
In TA 1000, Sauron began to act in the world again, occupying the stronghold of Dol Guldur, the Hill of Sorcery, in southern Mirkwood in TA 1050, and working in secret. There, he used the guise of a dreaded sorcerer, called "the Necromancer", and the Elves did not yet discern that he was the Dark Lord.
Azog began working with Sauron in Dol Guldur when the Dark Lord began to regain his power in the abandoned fortress. Azog was promised Thorin's head if he would help prepare and then lead Sauron's armies. He gathered Hunter Orcs and Wargs from Gundabad to participate in his hunt for the Dwarf.
He is killed by Bard with a black arrow and his body falls on the boat carrying the fleeing Master of Lake-town. It is later revealed that Smaug's attack on Erebor was all part of Sauron's design, meaning that Smaug and Sauron were in league with each other.
Still, the dragons proved more effective in battle. Then there's Gandalf the Grey, who managed to kill a Balrog single-handed, but decided to manipulate some Dwarves and one very reluctant hobbit into dealing with Smaug.
Why didn't Galadriel face Sauron in Lord of the Rings if she was powerful enough to fight him? Because she was not. She could never win in a one on one fight against a prepared Sauron.
