He is a yellow-orange color, medium-sized, short-haired dog with black ears. Unlike most Disney characters, Pluto is not anthropomorphic beyond some characteristics such as facial expression. He is Mickey's pet. Officially a mixed-breed dog, he made his debut as a bloodhound in the Mickey Mouse cartoon The Chain Gang.
The most widely accepted and probable theory is that Goofy has evolved from a dog, but Pluto was unable to do so. Another theory is that Disney animators wanted to flex their wide-range of skills by creating the same animal in two completely different ways.
Because when he was introduced Pluto was a bloodhound, and because he has since shown his extraordinary ability to sniff out all matter of things, though he is now classified as a mixed-breed pup, the bloodhound is surely in the mix. Pluto's exceptional sense of smell is seen in several storylines and gags.
To name the Mouse's trusty companion, Walt doggedly dug through many mutt-worthy monikers, including Pal and Homer the Hound. Finally, most likely in honor of the headline-grabbing newly discovered planet, and certainly with an eye to alliteration, the imaginative producer decided on Pluto the Pup.
Goofy and Pluto are both dogs. Yet Pluto walks on all fours, runs around naked and can only bark at the world. Goofy walks on two feet, wears clothing and has the power of speech — albeit, mostly to say "goofy" things. Maybe that's why I identify with him.

Does Pluto have a girlfriend?
Children. Dinah replaced Fifi the Peke as Pluto's girlfriend in the later Disney cartoons. She appears as Pluto's girlfriend although she sometimes dates Butch the Bulldog as well.
Clarabelle has also made appearances in the preschool series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and is featured as Goofy's girlfriend (in which she owns a puppy named Bella) and in the direct-to-video movie Mickey, Donald, Goofy: The Three Musketeers as Pete's lieutenant and Goofy's love interest.
Despite their appearances to the audience, they are all people in their cartoon world. Only the audience sees them as looking like animals. Pluto, however, is an actual dog, which is why he can't talk."
Originally known as Dippy Dawg, the character is more commonly known simply as "Goofy," a name used in his short film series. In his 1950s persona, Goofy was called George Geef, or G. G. Geef, implying that "Goofy" was merely a nickname. In Goofy Gymnastics (1949) he fills out a coupon with the name James Boyd.
Pete (also called Peg Leg Pete, Bad Pete and Black Pete, among other names) is a cartoon character created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks of The Walt Disney Company. Pete is traditionally depicted as the villainous arch-nemesis of Mickey Mouse, and was made notorious for his repeated attempts to kidnap Minnie Mouse.
Scooby-Doo is a Great Dane. The character was designed by Iwao Takamoto, an animator at Hanna-Barbera. According to the American Kennel Club, Great Danes are "the mighty 'Apollo of Dogs,'" which is very unlike the silly and cowardly Scooby-Doo.
Early production documents for Goof Troop contain a proposed explanation for the absence of Goofy's wife, proposing that she may have fallen off a cliff while Goofy was taking her picture during a visit to the Grand Canyon.
Goofy and his girlfriend had an unexpected pregnancy. The relationship didn't last (and she wasn't interested in being a mom yet) but Goofy was dedicated and wanted to care for his son, dropping out of college to get a job and care for Max.
Theory #1: Evolution – Some say that Goofy has evolved from a dog, while Pluto has failed to for whatever reason. Perhaps Pluto's time as a dog is due to the fact that he has an owner (Mickey) and has been unable to evolve while Goofy may have never had an owner.

Venetia Burney Phair was an accountant and taught economics and math in England. But she will best be remembered for what she accomplished at age 11 – giving Pluto its name. In an interview with NASA in January 2006, Phair said she offered the name Pluto over breakfast with her mother and grandfather.
