Newfoundlands are ideal companions in the world of therapy and are often referred to as "nanny dogs". The breed was memorialised in "Nana", the beloved guardian dog in J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan. The Newfoundland, in general, is good with other animals, but its size can cause problems if it is not properly trained.
Canonically, Nana is a Newfoundland dog (because author J.M. Barrie had a Newfoundland himself). However, in the 2003 Peter Pan, Nana is played by a St. Bernard. In Disney's Peter Pan, Nana's breed is a little more difficult to interpret, but she looks fairly similar to a St. Bernard.
Nana is the nursemaid dog of the Darling children.
In the script for the play, Barrie specifies that Nana is a Newfoundland. (Luath, the Barries' dog at that time, was a Newfoundland.) This is confirmed in the text of the novel Peter and Wendy.
The "tonic" given to the children by Nana may have been morphine. It was quite common in the early 20th century to give children "soothing syrups" and "tonics" to control their behavior. These concoctions turned out to consist of several different narcotics.
