As the film is based on the traditional fairy tale of the same name by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, the Beast (also known as Prince Adam) is based on the corresponding character from that fairy tale. This being said the character of Beast in the Disney animated and live action versions was never given a name.

Eventually, the Beast falls in love with Belle, and placing her happiness before his own, he releases her to tend to her sick father, a decision that disheartens him upon realizing that she had not yet returned his love which means that the curse remains unbroken.
