Christian forgives Elise and she gives him the whistle, they hug and Elise leaves for her home in California. In her sleep, Elise sees a vision of Dalton and the Lipstick Demon looming over him which frightens her awake. At that moment, her phone rings.
Melissa's spirit returns to her body in the real world, saving her life. Elise makes amends with her mother's spirit and she and Imogen return to their own bodies and reunite with Christian who forgives Elise. In her sleep, Elise has a dream about Dalton and a red-faced demon.
In the end, Elise meets a girl named Allison who is in a "coma" and realizes something rising behind her. Elise is shocked and says "Oh my god!" gasping, hinting a sequel. The thing that was behind Allison is believed to be the red face demon as it made the same crackling sound as it did in Insidious 1.
She looks and comes across Elise's camera, seeing a picture in it of the shadowy old woman. It's revealed that what Elise saw was Josh's old and dirty hand and nails, similar to the old woman's, implying that she has possessed him.
To understand how the Red Door got opened for Dalton, fans will have to remember the Insidious movie timeline and Elise's pivotal connection to it. In Insidious: The Last Key, Elise inadvertently opened the Red Door when she went into The Further to save her niece Melissa and was trying to get back to the real world.

Elise Returns As A Ghost In Insidious: The Red Door's Ending
Given when the movie takes place, Elise can only appear at the end of Insidious: The Red Door as a ghost. She's already been dead over a decade after Josh strangled her when he was possessed by the Black Bride at the end of Insidious.
Elise is killed at the end of the first movie by the Bride in Black, who has successfully possessed Josh. She reappears in the second movie as a spirit in the Further, where she helps Josh get back to his physical body and stop Parker from killing his family.
The next day, Dalton does not awaken from his sleep. Renai and Josh rush him to the hospital, where the doctors say he is in an inexplicable coma. Three months later, Dalton is moved back to his home while still in a coma.
A voice greets him, and he turns to see Elise Rainier standing in the road. Though he met her a long time ago, he doesn't remember who she is or how she helped him, and when she tells him that she was a friend of his mother's, he laments not being able to tell her about everything he's been through.
His spirit was trapped in the Further at the end of the movie, and his body taken over by the Old Woman, who had been trying to take over his body years before.
Dragging the franchise back to its bone-chilling roots, Insidious 5 catches up with the Lambert family, including haunted patriarch Josh (Patrick Wilson), spooked mom Renai (Rose Byrne) and traumatised sons Dalton (Ty Simpkins) and Foster (Andrew Astor).
In the 1960s, a teenage Elise sees Anna (who was locked in a room by Gerald) in the laundry room. When Gerald walked in, he saw Anna but pretended he saw nothing. After Elise stood up to Gerald and ran away, Gerald brutally murders Anna and puts her body in a suitcase in the ventilation shaft.
Insidious refers to something that is "slowly and secretly causing harm," and certainly Insidious: Chapter 3's story of a girl who manages to summon an evil spirit when she reaches out to what she thinks is the ghost of her recently deceased mother will cement the meaning of this word in our brains forever.
The Insidious: The Red Door ending proves that it was smart to focus on Josh and Dalton. They feel determined to help save each other, and that emotion powers their final battle with the demon. Dalton is possessed by the demon and Josh saves his son and makes sure that Chris survives, too.
Ultimately, the events of Insidious 2 are the reason why Josh and Renai got divorced. At the end of Insidious, it seems as though Josh has successfully rescued Dalton from The Further, however, in a shocking twist, he murders paranormal expert Elise.
Dalton, we learn, has grown up hating his father, because he felt abandoned by him. Josh, divorced from Renai (Rose Byrne), has been living in a fog, his wiped-out memories just out of reach.
The Big Picture. Insidious is not based on a true story, so you don't have to worry about real-life hauntings like in The Conjuring series. The inspiration for Insidious came from Wan and Whannell's desire to make a horror film about astral projection.
Elise notices something off about Josh and takes a picture of him. At that point, she learns that Josh is actually being possessed by the Bride in Black. Before Elise can react, the spirit murders her.
Blumhouse Productions is bringing back the spine-chilling horror franchise, Insidious, with the official confirmation of Insidious 6. The series, which commenced in 2010 with the original Insidious film, follows the harrowing experiences of the Lambert family as they confront malevolent spirits from The Further.
