The healing of all of the major characters in this movie is achieved by Moana answering the call that she was unequipped for. By conquering her fear of the ocean and learning to voyage, she follows the instruction to recruit Maui (who was also unequipped to support her) and return the heart to Te Fiti.
As an adolescent, Moana struggles to find her independence. She wants the independence and makes the decision to go beyond the reef to find Maui, the demigod and get back the heart of Te Fiti.
Though this would ultimately benefit all parties, this mindset is perhaps Moana's greatest flaw. In being heroic and deathly devoted to her goals, Moana can be selfish in that she is willing to endanger others in order to prove she is capable of confronting her ambitions without fail.
Scary, perilous scenes include run-ins with frightening, violent monsters (one made of lava, the other a giant crab) and with ocean storms and waves. Characters also go up against a ship full of adorable (but armed) coconut pirates, a character dies (offscreen), and a couple of male authority figures yell at Moana.
Meanwhile, with Te Fiti now a dark entity, a devastating curse would slowly begin to spread across the world, destroying flora and fauna, making it impossible for humanity to survive. According to legend, only the restoration of Te Fiti's heart could end the blight.
