In the final installment of the franchise, Mockingjay Part 2, movie fans saw a brief scene after President Coin's assassination in which Peeta Mellark knocked a nightlock pill out of Katniss Everdeen's hand before she was arrested.
Peeta decides, though, that he will go out on his own to act as a diversion in case Katniss and the others need it. Gale gives Peeta his nightlock pill in case Peeta's captured. They leave early in the morning, bundled up and styled by Tigris. Cressida and Pollux go first, leading the way to the City Circle.
Katniss tries to take her nightlock pill, but Peeta stops her and the pill is lost in the struggle. Katniss is bound, blindfolded, and locked in a room. For two days, she refuses food and sleep, only singing to pass the time. Haymitch comes to tell Katniss her trial is over.
Snow laughs after Katniss killed Coin because he enjoys the irony of the situation. He avoided the official execution ceremony, even though Panem's citizens still take their revenge on him, while Katniss ends up snatching away the victory and power that Coin thinks she has successfully secured.
That said, it was stated that an emergency election took place after Katniss assassinated Coin. Commander Paylor, a vital leader in the Second Rebellion from District 8 was elected as Panem's new president.

How was Gale responsible for Prim's death?
Prim was among the medics who arrived to treat the victims. Unfortunately, a second batch of bombs were set off, with Prim being killed in the explosions. Gale was not the one to drop the bombs from the hovercraft, but he was one of the key figures to devise the strategy of double bombings.
By killing President Coin, Katniss risked her safety in order to not only avenge Prim's death but also gift the people in Panem a chance to live in a peaceful and fair country for everyone. Katniss was incarcerated for a time, and she was sent back to District 12 after she was deemed unsuitable for a trial.
Using knowledge from the movie and the books, let's break down how The Hunger Games ends. Coin killed Prim to destroy Katniss because, as Boggs (Mahershala Ali) explains before his death, Katniss is her biggest threat to maintaining her power over Panem because of the influence Katniss has over the people.
She expected their years of friendship would make it harder to kill. But she knows her one and only true ally is Peeta, so she decides she must kill Finnick now. Katniss climbs down from the tree, determined to kill him now before he has the chance to kill her.
It is likely that he is a relative of Hilarius Heavensbee. In the Mockingjay - Part 2, Plutarch appears to smile as he looks at Coin's dead body, suggesting that he approved of her death.
Katniss here's this and understands that even though she may not love Peeta (then) that it's one less person who has to die. (At least that's what I have always thought.) Katniss realizes that if she pretends to be in love with Peeta people will want the capitol to let them survive.
At an unknown point in time years before the 74th Hunger Games, she was personally fired by Snow, the stated reason being due to her being too surgically enhanced.
For example, the opioid-like substance referred to as sleep syrup is administered by lead character Katniss to relieve her partner Peeta's pain when severely injured during the Games but also to forcibly control his movement and behaviour against his will.
During the supposed execution of Snow, she instead shoots Coin, due to her being responsible for Prim's death. She then attempts to kill herself with the suicide pill attached to her uniform, but Peeta stops her.
Answer and Explanation: Prim is killed by a bomb at the very end of the battle. Alma Coin sees an opportunity to turn the Capitol troops against Snow, and she decides the resulting loss of life from her plan is a worthwhile price to pay.
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.
Mags (Lynn Cohen) was a willing participant in the 3rd Quarter Quell. Despite knowing she wouldn't make it out of the arena alive, viewers grew fond of Mags as she was not only willing to volunteer for Annie to be in the Hunger Games, but stepped into the poisonous fog to sacrifice herself with no hesitation.
Even in the Games, she was trying to save the one she loved, and now that both factors were taken from her life, it made sense that she would question her existence. Additionally, Katniss was in great pain and still suffered from the trauma of the war. Death to her also meant a relief.
Finnick's death gave even more weight to Katniss's mission to kill Snow, since he was directly responsible for the death of one of her friends - making it all the more poignant when she chooses to kill President Coin (Julianne Moore) instead of getting to personally kill Snow herself.
Katniss speculates that Coin deliberately sent Prim to die in the Capitol bombing in order to fully gain her trust, but it's never outright confirmed or denied.
#CapCut Haymitch knew Katniss was planning something, she would never have voted for a symbolic Hunger Games and especially not for Prim. As soon as she did, he knew she was up to something and trusted her.
By killing Coin, Katniss ensured a chance for a peaceful and fair country, avenged her sister's death, and liberated Panem from the fascist government. The Hunger Games franchise is still an iconic series of books and movies, with the latter truly cementing the property as an international phenomenon.
This interaction was so surprising to fans because it's not in the books at all. While, throughout the series, there's some chemistry between the two, nothing ever comes of the tension in Suzanne Collins' novels. Beyond the kiss, nothing happened between the two in the movies either.
Snow can't stand to see a young woman betray a young man's affection—his view of what happened 65 years ago. And so he takes out his old, festering wound on Katniss.
After reading the book and watching the film, it seems clear that Lucy Gray realizes Snow was responsible for the death of his friend Sejanus Plinth (Josh Andrés Rivera). If Snow could sell his best friend down the river for personal gain, it was only a matter of time until he did the same with her.
