Shrek (Mike Myers), who now has three kids, Fergus, Farkle, and Felicia, is tired of having the doing the same thing everyday. He wishes he could be a real ogre again when people were afraid of him.
He wants to figure out why they're suddenly invading his swamp. His life was normal (chillin' in the swamp) then got set to chaos (which he needs to restore) the minute the creatures invade his swamp. This sets him off to talk to Lord Farquaad (whom he finds, and gets a new goal, at the end of act 1).
A mean lord exiles fairytale creatures to the swamp of a grumpy ogre, who must go on a quest and rescue a princess for the lord in order to get his land back.
The film uses the two truest and most overused themes that there are, “be careful what you wish for,” and “you don't know what you have until you lose it.” “Shrek Forever After” was overall a very cute, appealing movie with many funny parts.
The only catch is he has to give up a day from his past in exchange. He agrees, but finds out the day that Rumpelstiltskin took was the day Shrek was born. So now, everything has been completely changed - Shrek never met Donkey, never rescued Fiona, never did anything, because he never existed.

First off, Fiona once mentioned that when she was a child, a witch cast a spell on her, yet the intro of Shrek 2 implies that she was born with the curse, which could be a consequence of the Fairy Godmother's deal with Harold, thus still making her responsible for it.
