Keegan Connor Tracy is just such a phenomenal actress and she shines in this film. it's not "scary" per se but the film does have a sense of dread/creepiness throughout much of it. there are a couple of shocking moments in the film that thankfully didn't feel like "jump scares" (i can't stand lame/cheap jump scares).

It's a not overly scary haunted house / imaginary friend tale that has one mid-story twist and is otherwise as paint by numbers as you can imagine. It's pretty engaging though despite how unoriginal it is. I won't remember much about Z even in as short as a couple months from now, but it's an enjoyable 80 minutes.

The R-rating doesn't ban children under 17 from a movie, it restricts them to watching it with a parent or guardian (and includes a recommendation that parents and guardians learn more before allowing their child to see the movie).
