The Hunger Games General chatter is made until Gale compliments her expensive dress. Madge was skeptical of his sudden compliment but states nonetheless that she wants to look nice if she was to be picked to go to the Capitol.This angers Gale, causing the meeting to end shortly.
He bothers her for not having to enter for tesserae, as her family is wealthy and doesn't have to worry about food. In Catching Fire, after Gale is flogged by Thread, Madge shows up at Katniss' house to give Katniss six vials of her mother's morphling to help Gale cope with the pain.
Gale does not marry anyone in The Hunger Games. He and Katniss talk about running away together and starting a new life in the wilderness, but they never officially marry.

Peeta urges Katniss to run and stays to fight fellow tribute Cato while she escapes. He survives the encounter with Cato but suffers a stab wound on his leg. He camouflages himself into the rocks and mud alongside a riverbank, slowly dying of blood poisoning until Katniss finds him days later.
Cato's competitive nature is even more extreme than those of his fellow Careers, as he harbors a deep resentment of Katniss due to her high training score and iterates to his allies that he must be the one to kill her.
Before the Capitol battle, Gale had explained to Katniss his series of bombs designed to feed off human compassion: a small bomb would go off, and then when medical aid rushed in, a second bomb would go off, killing those people as well. Incidentally, it's this exact type of bomb that took Prim's life.
Katniss's focus on survival and her family's safety prevented her from fully considering romance, but her feelings for Peeta and Gale diverged in the end. Katniss ultimately chose Peeta because he understood her trauma and she didn't want to lose him, proving her love for him.

In the end, Katniss and Gale grew apart, as many childhood friends and young loves do. She needed something different in her life, and with Gale's link to Primrose's death, Katniss found a reason to cut ties. If Katniss ever wanted to find comfort again, she knew she had to return to Peeta for the long term.
Katniss is rendered deaf in one ear after she blows up the Careers' supplies, and she doesn't regain any hearing on her left side until afterwards when the Capitol gives her a hearing aid.
As she approaches him, Peeta wraps his hands around her neck and throws Katniss around the room. He begins to strangle her, nearly killing her. He is wild, unable to be stopped, at least until Boggs knocks him out with a metal tray.
Peeta thanks Katniss for finding him and she says that he would have done the same. He talks about what Katniss should do if he doesn't make it back. She's worried that he might die, and to keep him from speaking of such things, she kisses him.
Though both were cruel toward the other tributes, they had formed an emotional connection with each other. However, in the film, Cato and Clove seemed to have no relationship with each other beyond that of allies.
Peeta, however, is genuinely in love with her, as is revealed on their train ride home, when Katniss admits that she has been partially faking her feelings for him, leaving him heartbroken and cold towards her.
Like Katniss, he fights to protect those he cares about. Gale is motivated by a desire to avenge the deaths of his people and he devotes himself to designing weaponry. He trains to be a soldier with fervor while he tries to care for Katniss and her family.
Mockingjay. Katniss sees the remains of Madge's home. After speaking to Thom, who was in front of their house, finds out that Madge and her family, as well as the two people who worked for them, did not survive the destruction of District 12.
