The Ares IV mission was a proposed manned mission to Mars during the 2040's. It was later terminated after astronaut Mark Watney used Ares IV's MAV to depart Mars.
Both rockets, deemed safer than the then-current Space Shuttle, would have employed technologies developed for the Apollo program, the Shuttle program, and the Delta IV EELV program. However, the Constellation program, including Ares V and Ares I, was canceled in October 2010 by the NASA Authorization Act of 2010.
Ares V was the fifth mission to Mars, but the fifth mission in the Ares program. Much like the previous missions, it's goal was to conduct experiments on the planet's surface with six astronauts. Ares V was the first time where an astronaut, Rick Martinez, returned to the planet's surface for a second time.
The Ares III crew was due to depart Mars on the 5th December, 2035; after 9 sols (18 sols in the film) on Mars. However, the mission was cut short after a Dust Storm engulfed the landing site, and an emergency evacuation was ordered by NASA .

The Ares III mission was supposed to last 31 sols (a sol is a 24.5-hour Martian day). Just to be safe, NASA sent 68 sols' worth of food, for six people.

NASA even let the film crew base their designs off of real NASA technology, like spacecraft and prototype habitation modules. That means that while the story is fictional, a lot of the cool stuff Mark comes up with to survive is based on real science. However, the movie wasn't able to get everything exactly right.
In the end, Mark decides to become an instructor for aspiring astronauts, and his tale of survival becomes a principal guide for the next generation. Mark emphasizes the importance of perseverance, as luck can only take one so far.
Delays in the Ares I development schedule due to budgetary pressures and unforeseen engineering and technical difficulties would have increased the gap between the end of the Space Shuttle program and the first operational flight of Ares I.
