He made several desperate attempts to retain his position but was eventually sacked from it in complete disgrace. After the incidents of book 5 the then Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge was highly criticised in the magical community by the public as well as the Daily Prophet. He was stripped of his position of Minister and possibly shunned from the ministry itself.

LONDON (AP) — Robert Hardy, a veteran British stage and screen actor who played Minister for Magic Cornelius Fudge in the “Harry Potter” movies, has died. He was 91. His family said Hardy died Thursday after “a tremendous life: a giant career in theater, television and film spanning more than 70 years.”
Due to the immense fear that Voldemort commanded and the threat he posed against wizarding Britain, Minister Fudge adamantly refused to believe that he had returned and instead deluded himself into believing a more comforting nonsensical scenario, that Dumbledore was trying to usurp his position of Minister for Magic.

What happened to Cornelius Fudge after Deathly Hallows?
It is unknown what happened to Fudge after Lord Voldemort took over the Ministry of Magic, but he lost his position as messenger between the Minister and the Muggle Prime Minister, as the Death Eaters had no use for Muggle liaisons.
Many people, like Rubeus Hagrid, viewed Fudge as a well-intentioned minister, but also viewed him as a bit of a bungler. While Fudge was accepting of all blood types of Wizards and witches, he mostly favored Pure Bloods, but he also agreed with Arthur Weasley's Muggle Protection act.
Harry describes Umbridge to Sirius Black, saying that she's vile enough to be a Death Eater, despite not being one. Umbridge is also depicted to be a prejudiced person, despising half-breeds and Muggle-born witches and wizards to the point of firing Hagrid due to his half-giant birth status.

A Ministry of Magic employee, Umbridge, was sent to keep an eye on Dumbledore in the event he was planning a coup against the then Minister for Magic, Cornelius Fudge.
Although Umbridge was not a Death Eater, and had no direct contact with Lord Voldemort, she showed that she was fairly in line with their goals. This was due to Umbridge's callous nature and her prejudiced beliefs, both of which were similar to Death Eater behavior.
If you have only seen the films, you might be surprised to hear that it wasn't Cho Chang who betrayed Dumbledore's Army to Professor Umbridge – it was Marietta Edgecombe. A friend of Cho's and a fellow Ravenclaw, Marietta (reluctantly) joined the DA.
When the centaurs made threatening moves, Umbridge cast "Incarcerous" on the centaur Magorian, strangling him with ropes.
