Lord Barkis Bittern - Corpse Bride (2005)Barkis unwittingly drinks from a chalice filled with poison while taunting his previous victim Emily, killing him in seconds and allowing the undead to eagerly drag him to the underworld to pay for his crimes.
Emily intercepts the sword and orders Barkis out of the church, but he realizes that the undead must obey the living. However, he unknowingly drinks the poisoned wine, while insulting Emily because of her death and mocking her because he was very alive, accidentally killing himself.
His plan is eventually revealed as marrying Victoria Everglot, in order to obtain wealth and riches from his dowry. This plan mirrors the one he used years before as he deceives Emily, the corpse bride, into falling in love with him and giving him the riches he desires.
The beginning of Corpse Bride revealed that Emily had been one of the most beautiful women in town before her death. She could have married anyone, but she fell in love with a mysterious man her father disapproved of.
Despite saying the wedding vows and placing the ring upon Emily's finger, Victor wasn't technically married to Victoria since she was dead and he was still alive. After discovering Victoria was already married to Lord Barkis, Victor agrees to die so he can be properly married to Emily.
However, despite Victor expressing deep feelings for Emily, he was not in love with her. In fact, it is highly possible that he only agreed to the marriage out of sympathy for Emily's case. His sympathy for her was stated when he tried to apologize yet explain at the same time to Emily about them being different.
